ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted May 13, 2016 ExTS Admin Posted May 13, 2016 Hi Neil, Let's see if the problem with SFC is down to any disc corruption. Step 1 You can do this by running the Scandisk utility within Windows. Click Start >> Computer Right click on your main drive (usually 'C') Select Properties Click on the Tools tab Under Error Checking.. Click Check Now Tick the options that you require ( Please tick both options ) Click Start On the screen that comes up.. Click Yes then OK Now restart your computer. Note: Be patient. Analyzing the drive can be a lengthy process If there is any corruption of the disc, this should fix it. Step 2 Now try running SFC again, if it still freezes................. Reboot in to 'Safe Mode' Restart your computer. When the computer starts you will see your computer's hardware being listed. When you see this information (this is before Windows starts to load) start to gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with the Windows Advanced Boot Options. Select the Safe Mode option using the arrow keys. Then press the enter key on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode. When Windows starts you will be at a typical logon screen. Logon to your computer and the system will enter Safe mode. Now try the SFC again. To exit safe mode... just reboot the system normally. Shall I restore windows to a normal start up functionality Yes, anytime you want. Let me know how the disc check went and also if SFC eventually ran. Quote Member of:UNITE
neilofnorton Posted May 16, 2016 Author Posted May 16, 2016 Starbuck Did the scandisk - took about 6 hours. At the end of the process I got no result-should I have received anything ? Did the SFC again - no change froze at the same 63%. Did the SFC twice in Safe Mode- got to 63% -the cursor still flashing-stayed at 63% then seized I then did second scan in safe mode- the cursor flash-I left it for 90 minutes but still at 63% so I turned the computer off. I don't know if it is relevant but F8 process would not activate Safe Mode- I got safe mode by turning the computer off and when turning it on given three choices - turn windows on normally or in safe mode Neil Quote
neilofnorton Posted May 16, 2016 Author Posted May 16, 2016 Starbuck Just after I posted the above I attempted a Microsoft security solutions "Full" scan. Of late the computer would seize up within two minutes. This time the scan continued for about 80 minutes before seizing up Neil Quote
ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted May 16, 2016 ExTS Admin Posted May 16, 2016 Did the scandisk - took about 6 hours. At the end of the process I got no result-should I have received anything ? Normally the results will just get saved to your system. Trying to explain how to get to them and view them is not exactly easy...... but as always, we have an easy way to view them on the desktop. :) Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog, now type: powershell.exe and press Enter or OK. When PowerShell opens you should see a screen something like this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/pshell1_zpsxijrzwwp.png Now copy and paste the command in the quote box below get-winevent -FilterHashTable @{logname="Application"; id="1001"}| ?{$_.providername –match "wininit"} | fl timecreated, message | out-file Desktop\CHKDSKResults.txt http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/pshell2_zpsbjrvc42v.png It'll now look something like this: and press the Enter on your keyboard.. A CHKDSKResults.txt file will be created on your desktop, that is the log file of your chkdsk scan results from Event Viewer. You can post the .txt file here if you want and I'll look through it. Note: Sometimes the .txt file can be quite big, so you may be better off to attach it instead of posting it in your reply. Did the SFC again - no change froze at the same 63%. This time the scan continued for about 80 minutes before seizing up Is there anything on the scene to indicate what file/folder is being checked when the freezing occurs? I don't know if it is relevant but F8 process would not activate Safe Mode- I got safe mode by turning the computer off and when turning it on given three choices - turn windows on normally or in safe mode The F8 key is the most common way of getting to safe mode on Win7. The screen you mention will normally come up when the system has been shut down using the power button... and then restarted. Quote Member of:UNITE

ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted May 17, 2016 ExTS Admin Posted May 17, 2016 Hi Neil, Hope this is what you want to comply with your first request Nice one Neil, thanks :) Free space verification is complete. Correcting errors in the master file table's (MFT) BITMAP attribu te. Windows has made corrections to the file system. So the CHKDSK did fix a few things.... that's something. On the screen was c:\windows\system32\driver store\file repository\prnhp002.inf-amd64-neutral-O4dO5dlf6a90ea24 Seems there are a few folders that MSSE full scan has problems with. M$ are aware of this but as of yet they haven't addressed the problem. The obvious thing to do now is to exclude the file repository folder from the MSSE scan. Open Microsoft Security Essentials, Click the Settings tab and select Excluded files & locations, Now use the Add button to select files, folders, or drives. This is the folder you need to exclude. c:\windows\system32\driverstore\file repository Hopefully this will cure the problem. Quote Member of:UNITE

ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted May 19, 2016 ExTS Admin Posted May 19, 2016 Ok Neil, This is the path you need to follow.......... c:\windows\system32\driverstore\file repository So yes, you need to click on the C drive, then open the Windows folder, then open the system32 folder, then open the Drivestore folder. Then click on the File Repository folder. Once the File Repository folder is selected, this is what you need to add. The link below explains the procedure ( although the folder selected is not the same )take a look it may help you. How to exclude a file/folder from Microsoft Security Essentials scan in Windows 7/Vista/XP? You've had to do more than I normally ask of members, but you are doing well. Well done. ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted May 22, 2016 ExTS Admin Posted May 22, 2016 Hi Neil, security essentials seem to be at the root of all the problems-is it about time it was binned ?? If so what should it be replaced by ?? McAfee was on the computer when bought from Dell when new but that was also a pain. It's certainly worth thinking about a change. Not every program works on every system ( it should, but it doesn't ) Yes, definitely stay away from McAfee.... that was the first thing I dumped when I bought my laptop. Are you after a 'free' antivirus program or a 'Paid' version? If you want a 'Free' version.... I can recommend one of these: Avira AntiVir Bitdefender Free If you are looking for a 'Paid' AV, you could try one of these: [Eset Nod32 [Emsisoft AntiMalware There are plenty of others, but these are the 2 that I run on my systems and have never had any problems at all. If you do decide on one of the paid for versions ( they're not that expensive... just under £30, but will give you a better protection ).... don't forget that both of these will give you a 30 day trial before you have to pay. Most 'paid' versions will also give you the option of protecting the system from Adware as well (although this setting is usually a user setting and not a default one ) So you can try one.... if it doesn't suit your system, uninstall it and try the other. Note: Make sure that you uninstall any present AV program before installing another. Only Install one of these, update the definitions and then run a full scan. Let it quarantine/delete anything it finds. Let me know if there is anything that it reports but can not remove. The "internet explorer" stopped working problem is always there on yahoo I have noticed that you don't have an 'Adblocker' installed....... There may well be something on the Yahoo site that is trying to load and IE doesn't like it.... anything is possible. The benefits of ad blocking include quicker loading and cleaner looking web pages free from advertisements, lower resource waste (bandwidth, CPU, memory, etc.), and privacy benefits gained through the exclusion of the tracking and profiling systems of ad delivery platforms. Blocking ads can also save substantial amounts of energy. Users who pay for total transferred bandwidth ("capped" or pay-for-usage connections) including most mobile users worldwide, have a direct financial benefit from filtering an ad before it is loaded. Streaming audio and video, even if they are not presented to the user interface, can rapidly consume gigabytes of transfer especially on a faster 4G connection. It is a known problem with most web browsers, including Firefox, that restoring sessions often plays multiple embedded ads at once. Using an advertisement blocker stops such behaviour. No adblocker will completely remove all ads.... but they will get rid of about 90% - 95% of them. Firefox: uBlock Origin Click on Add to Firefox. Once installed, I recommend that you update the blocking definitions. Tools >> Add-ons >> Extensions >> Options in uBlock Origin. Scroll down and click on Show Dashboard. Now click on 3rd Party Filters >> Update Now. Google Chrome: uBlock Origin Click on Add to Chrome Once installed, I recommend that you update the blocking definitions. Right click on the uBlock Origin icon (top right of the browser) and select Options. Now click on 3rd Party Filters >> Update Now. Internet Explorer: Since uBlock Origin is not available for IE, I'll recommend you install Adblock Plus for Internet Explorer instead. Click on Install for Internet Explorer. Click on Run notification at the bottom of the browser. If you now get a notification saying IE is still running, would you like to shut down.... click Yes. Follow the install pages by click next and finally finish. Re-open Internet Explorer. At the bottom you'll see: The Adblock Plus for IE browser helper object is ready for use..... click Enable. ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted May 23, 2016 ExTS Admin Posted May 23, 2016 Hi Neil, Costco doing a good deal on Kaspersky 2016 for £14 on line - Suitable ?? I've heard very good things about Kaspersky from friends and other members. The reason I don't add it to my list of recommended AV's is that with 'paid' programs I only recommend the programs that I have tried. As I've never installed and run Kaspersky I don't add it the list. But at that price, I'd say go for it. Yesterday tried to do a backup - tried twice - computer - seized up on each occasion after 30/40 minutes- is this problem connected to Security essentials ?? I would doubt it. We never got to run SFC successfully, did we. It may well be that there's a corrupt system file that is giving problems..... There's a good article that describes how you may get SFC to run... How to Fix: 'sfc /scannow' Fails, Won't Complete If it still won't run.... the article explains how to get a copy of the report onto your desktop ( just like we did with CHKDSK ) That may help us to see what the problem is. When you say that you tried to run a backup..... what procedure are you using? Is it the built in backup program, a third party program or backing up individual files to a USB stick? neilofnorton Posted June 1, 2016 Author Posted June 1, 2016 Starbuck Yes only on yahoo My broadband is BT-in bed with yahoo ?? Neil Quote
ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted June 1, 2016 ExTS Admin Posted June 1, 2016 Hi Neil, Yes only on yahoo Ok, as it's only Yahoo it may be a case of having to live with it. Trying to sort out why it only happens on one site could take ages to narrow down. My broadband is BT-in bed with yahoo I gathered it was BT from the FRST reports. One of the problems with these ISP's is that they always seem to supply a disc that they want you to run and install..... you don't have to though. The software they add to these discs rarely helps and can sometimes be a pain. My wife used to work for Virgin Media ( on Tech Support) and if someone phoned up with problems trying to install the disc, she used to say just throw it away, there's nothing on there that is needed to connect to the internet. Let's finish the cleaning process and remove the tools we have used. We'll also set you a fresh restore point. Step 1 Let's just remove any Temp files that have accumulated since the last fixlist. Please download the attached fixlist.txt file (bottom of this post) and save it to C:\Users\Neil\Downloads. NOTE. It's important that both files, FRST and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work. NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system Re-run FRST/FRST64 (which ever is installed ) and press the Fix button just once and wait. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/frstfix_zps7db0c905.png The tool will make a log in the Download folder (Fixlog.txt). But I don't really need this report. Step 2 This program will remove any tools we have used and will also clear any reports. Download Delfix and save it to your desktop. Ensure Remove disinfection tools is checked. Also place a checkmark next to: Create registry backup Purge system restore http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/delf_zpsb39a5ff3.png . Click the Run button. When the tool has finished, please reboot your system to finalize the cleanup procedure. A log will open in notepad.... but i don't actually need this report Step 3 Eset can be removed using the Remove Programs feature in Control Panel. If there are any .txt reports left on your Desktop they can be deleted now. Glad I was able to help. Restart MBAM Click on the History tab >> Application Logs. Double click on the scan log which shows the Date and time of the scan that showed the infections. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/mbamlog_zpsa7413aad.png Click 'Copy to Clipboard' http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/mbamhis_zps7bfe6503.png Paste the contents of the clipboard into your reply. Click I agree to the Terms of Use. Click on the Scan button. AdwCleaner will begin to scan your computer. After the scan has finished... Click on the Cleaning button. Press OK when asked to close all programs and follow the onscreen prompts. Press OK again to allow AdwCleaner to restart the computer and complete the removal process. After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[C0].txt) will open automatically. Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply. A copy of that logfile will also be saved in the C:\ folder. In your next reply, please submit: The MBAM report from the last scan. New AdwCleaner report Thanks. Quote Member of:UNITE

The clipboard is an invisible storage area within your system. Once you have clicked on 'Copy to Clipboard', just start a reply here..... right click in the message reply box and select Paste. That should do it. Quote Member of:UNITE
