PC running W7 64 bit

I had my PC set to download W10 upgrade files in background only.

Today in middle of some other work - it suddenly started to upgrade my PC !

I stopped that .....

W7 recovered OK

I followed advice to remove KB3035583 and this did remove the white W10 ready icon in task bar

However if I go to Windows Update ... it shows:

"Your upgrade to Windows 10 is ready ... you need to restart your PC"

I have used cleanmgr.exe to remove temporary installation files ..... but no change.

If I go to 'Check for updates' so I can hide KB3035583 form future updates .... I can't access this as I get the message "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because you must firsrt restart the computer so that a previous installation can be completed"

Reboots do not clear it.

Tried restore to earlier version ... restore fails, unable to extract file.

.

All restore points failed to work.

Appeared that it was stuck in a part way through W10 install position.

Anyway I found a simple fix .... and for anybody else the solution is to use the GWX10 control panel.

A great free utility to resolve or prevent W10 upgrade.

"GWX Control Panel is a free program that you can use to do the following on Windows 7 and Windows 8:

  • Remove the "Get Windows 10" icon that appears in your notification area.
  • Prevent your Windows Update control panel from upgrading your computer to Windows 10.
  • Prevent your computer from secretly downloading Windows 10 installation files.
  • Detect and remove the hidden Windows 10 installation files if they're already on your PC.
  • Optionally monitor your computer for unwanted Windows 10-related settings and files. (New in version 1.6.)

GWX Control Panel really works, is safe and easy to use, and gives you the option to re-enable the icon and upgrade notifications if you're ever ready to move forward with Windows 10. "

Thanks for the up-date Osprey - good to hear that you found a solution.

You should try to create a Restore Point - if you have not done this already :)

Especially if the ones available do not work.

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

Did that as soon as it was fixed.

Not sure if it will be any use as never had a restore point that will work. Did it any way though.
