ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted July 12, 2016 ExTS Admin Posted July 12, 2016 Nice one Scott. We didn't have a lot of luck with the Windows Updates before, so let's try the CPU usage. I don't know how much you know about the Task Manager... so I'll assume you're a beginner ( no disrespect intended ) and make it as easy as I can. Easiest way to identify what is using the CPU is to use the Task Manager and the Resource Monitor. Right click on the Task Bar and select Start Task Manager: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/tm_zpsgtilglux.png The Processes tab will show you basically what is being used by each process. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/tm2_zpsozltz5fl.jpg If you want more in depth information.... Click on the Performance tab and then click on Resource Monitor. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/tm3_zpskh85ezvv.jpg When it opens, click on the CPU tab: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/tm4_zpsxetrmeoc.jpg The sluggish process/processes should now float to the top of the list. CPU tracks the current processor usage in green, much the same as the Task Manager. At the top of the graph is a blue line that shows the processor’s maximum speed. This should help you to identify what is using the CPU If you need more information about the other sections of the Resource Monitor, this should help: How to Use Windows Vista's Resource Monitor Let me know if you find the culprit. ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted July 17, 2016 ExTS Admin Posted July 17, 2016 Hi Scott, This is the pic you sent me: http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a135/MrBreeze1200/SnapShot_160716_153311.jpg Explorer.exe does seem to be using a lot. That coupled with Avast ( which has been known to be a resource hog) could cause problems. Try a 'Clean Boot' and then run the Resource monitor again.... just to see what the difference is: Hold down the Windows key on your keyboard and press the R key. With the Run dialogue window open, type in msconfig and click the OK button. You should now be looking at the System Configuration window. Click on the Services tab. On the Services tab, youll notice a long list of services available on your PC First, check the box labeled Hide All Microsoft Services. <<<<<<<<<<< Important Next, click the Disable All button By performing these two steps, you have effectively turned off all services from third-party software developers. All Microsoft services remain intact and will be ready to load when you reboot Windows. Finally, click the OK button and reboot the system When you reboot, you may get messages that certain hardware and software are not unavailable. This is normal. Just be sure to hide all Microsoft services before you use the Disable All button. Otherwise, you may encounter boot up errors when you reboot your PC. Remember, running Windows like this is just temporary. To restore Windows to a normal start up functionality: Start the System Configuration Utility again (MSCONFIG) On the "General" tab: Click to select "Normal Startup" Click "OK" Choose the "Exit with Restart" option to restart your computer. ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted August 24, 2016 ExTS Admin Posted August 24, 2016 Hi Scott, As the problem is no longer Malware related, your thread has been moved here to the Vista forum. Aura will now be assisting you with the SFCFix report. Quote Member of:UNITE
Aura Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 Hi SPSpellman :) My name is Aura and I'll be assisting you with your SFCFix/Windows Update issue. It seems like your COMPONENTS Hive is corrupt. I may be able to fix it. If not, we'll see if you have a previous version of it available and if not, sadly you'll have to do a Repair Install :( But let's see what we can do first. http://i.imgur.com/88fYBWt.pngRetrieving the COMPONENTS Hive Follow the instructions below to retrieve your COMPONENTS Hive and send me it. Open your Windows Explorer, and navigate to the C:\Windows\System32\Config folder; In this folder, find the COMPONENTS file (there's no extension), and copy it to your Desktop; Note: If you receive an error message saying that the COMPONENTS file is in use, restart your computer and try again. If the error message persist, let me know. Right-click on it, and select Send to... and choose Compressed (zipped) folder; Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here; Quote
