skyhawk2016 Posted July 7, 2016 Posted July 7, 2016 OK Guys or Gals I’m in the need of some help, in fact a lot of it so let me put you in the picture. First off what I know about computers you could write on the back of a postage stamp. I’m a silver surfer so come from the age of when a calculator was at best a slide rule. OK what I’m trying to do, I want to format a computer hard drive and install Microsoft Windows 10 Professional and then install Microsoft Office 2010 Professional. There’s just no way I can afford the 2016 version. In my search for a copy (DVD), I came across someone selling Microsoft Office on e-bay, the advert read as follows: This is a genuine item displaying the words ORIGIN:IRELAND on the certificate of authenticity. Please be aware that there are many counterfeit versions around. Avoid any that do not say ORIGIN:IRELAND and even if they do, take care to ensure that the dark grey authenticity strip is interwoven through the certificate and appears through one or two worn effect patches at random intervals. Never accept one where the part number GLC-00181 is prefixed with the letters SKU (that only features on foreign and counterfeit versions) and avoid any which say MADE IN IRELAND or MADE IN USA. I sent them a message saying I thought all Microsoft stuff came from the USA, and this was their reply. [h=3]No, USA is where Microsoft may have their head office but they make their software in Puerto Rico for the American continent.[/h][h=3]They make their software in Ireland for the European and African continents and in Singapore for Asia and Australia. There are some exceptions, they also make a variant of the latest 2016 version in Ireland for the emerging markets. Emerging Markets cover Brazil, Russia, South Africa etc. There is a key card version of Office 2010 onwards in Mexico but that’s for the USA only....[/h][h=3]So with that in mind they label their software as follows: Windows and Office for Europe, Africa and all Emerging Markets = ORIGIN:IRELAND Office 2010 Product Key Card for Europe = Made In Ireland Windows and Office for Americas = Made In Puerto Rico Office 2010 Product Key Card for Americas = Made In Mexico Windows and Office for Asia = Made In Singapore As you can imagine, the counterfeiters in Asia get quite confused and print the fake Certificates of Authenticity with all multitudes of variations.[/h]Made In USA = Fake ORIGIN:USA = Fake Made In Ireland on anything other than Office 2010 Product Key Card = Fake ORIGIN:IRELAND on an Office 2010 Product Key Card. = Fake etc Sometimes they get it right so you then need to study the certificate of authenticity in detail, they always use the wrong font type or authenticity strip. I have just purchased a DVD of Microsoft Office 2010 off someone selling on Amazon, and doesn’t it say on the side of the box MADE IN USA. I have to admit I thought sod it I’ll telephone Microsoft UK and find out once and for all if it should state Origin Ireland, well what a fiasco that was, no disrespect to anyone but I did have difficulty because of their diction unless it’s me just getting old. As the conversation went on they just didn’t appear to know the answer to my question which was not a rocket science one, all I wanted to know was what the packing labels should have printed on them. I was advised to put the DVD into the computer and when it asks me for the authentication key type in the number, if the computer comes up with an error message contact them and they will be able to tell me if it’s genuine or otherwise. Can anyone answer the questions below: At the moment the DVD which I have just bought is still sealed in its box but I can see MADE IN USA through clear seal, should I send it back without opening or could I send it back if it doesn’t work, even though it’s been opened. If I don’t have a genuine key will it stop from installing the program? If it does install will I still get updates from Microsoft as they occur? Will I get an annoying message pop up every time I boot up telling it’s a fraud and I should be shot? As far as technical support is concerned, if I telephoned Microsoft about something no doubt their answers would be way over my head, that’s if I can understand the diction, so I guessing I won’t miss a lot if I can’t get technical support. One last thing before buying the DVD through Amazon these are the questions I asked the seller: Hi Can you answer the following questions please: 1: Does this version of Microsoft Office require a yearly licence subscription or is it a one off payment? 2: I shall be installing Microsoft Windows 10 onto a completely blank hard drive, can this copy of Microsoft Office then be installed onto the computer in other words it is not an upgrade? 3: Is it a UK English version? 4: Does it have a legitimate licence key recognised by Microsoft so I can contact them for help if required? The reply: It's a full English version, not an upgrade. Once you register it on your PC, the key is activated and recognized by MS which means the customer service is available. Thanks to anyone out there for taking the time to read my novel, sorry it’s not a best seller but as I said at the onset any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. Quote
KenB Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 Hi and welcome :) come from the age of when a calculator was at best a slide rule. I used log tables throughout :) To try to answer your questions: If I don’t have a genuine key will it stop from installing the program? You will not be able to get passed the installation process without a legitimate product key. click here If you find that the Product Key is not being accepted you can contact M$ and let them know where you bought it. [ they will not reimburse you ] Or - Contact the seller and ask for money back or you will pass on their details to M$ who will take legal action. If it does install will I still get updates from Microsoft as they occur? Mainstream Support has finished but Extended Support finishes in 2020. Extended Support includes Critical Updates. can this copy of Microsoft Office then be installed onto the computer I see no reason why not. Presumably the Product Key is not in use on another machine ? Is it a UK English version? Not sure. By "English" do you mean UK English spelling ? If so this can be changed from US if necessary from within Office. click here Does it have a legitimate licence key recognised by Microsoft so I can contact them for help if required? If it installs then the Product Key would seem to be legitimate. I thought all Microsoft stuff came from the USA, and this was their reply. I cannot confirm or otherwise what they have stated. It doesn't seem logical to produce DVDs in 3 different locations. I did look up M$ Ireland and no mention is made of production facilities. They do provide support for Europe - Africa etc but this is not production. click here Not sure how much you paid for this version but if it was cheap then I would be suspicious. eBay sellers are rated. Was this person anywhere near 100% after a large number of sales? eBay also have a grievance procedure which seems to favour the buyer. Now that you have it you have two options: 1. Try installing. 2. If installation fails contact seller / eBay / M$ EDIT: by skyhawk2016 / July 8, 2016 6:33 AM - I've decided to send the DVD back, I have since found out what the label on the outside of the box should look like for the UK market. Is this you posted on another site over 12 hours ago [it is now 6-40 pm here in UK ] ? It seems I have wasted a good hour of my time researching this for nothing You had 10 or 11 hours to let us know so that I didn't waste my time !! skyhawk2016 Posted July 9, 2016 Author Posted July 9, 2016 Hello Ken I hope you'd got the antilogs to go along with logs I didn't buy the DVD off e-bay but it was from a market seller on Amazon, the price I paid for it was £129.99 I guess you get what you pay for, like they say if something sounds too good to be true it usually is. I intend to send the DVD back box unopened, I've had it on good authority the label on the side of the box should read :ORIGIN IRELAND not MADE IN IRELAND or MADE IN USA. Yes you are quite right they are made in one place, Ireland is a support centre, I still don't really understand why for the UK and Europe they need to have :ORIGIN IRELAND on the box and not USA unless it's the time difference for making phone inquiries but I'm not even going to go there. OK Ken I have to own up I did post the same question on another forum, if you look you will see I joined both of them on the same date and reason for posting on the two of them was as a newbie I wasn't sure how quickly I would get a reply and I am rather anxious to get the DVD sent back. I'm a little lost when you say I posted on another site 12 hours ago, I more or less posted them at the same and I'm right here in the sunny UK, I guess I wasn't expecting the same person to respond on both sites, it certainly wasn't my intention to waste anyones time, I'm glad of all the help I can get and appreciate the time and effort you've put into your answers. I've no doubt there will be a fair few questions coming from me, because all I've ever done on a computer is use it, certainly not installed software programs. I tell a lie I did download something once off the internet and promptly wound up with conduit on my computer, so installing windows and office will be my first attempt. By the way I did come across this website while trying to find out about the legitimacy of the software and how to tell if it was dodgy or not. https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/howtotell/Software.aspx?tab=PackagedSoftwareTab In the meantime if you know of any sites advertising Windows Pro and Windows 10 Pro also Office 2010 Pro please don't hesitate to let me know. Ken thank you once again for your help Clive Quote
skyhawk2016 Posted July 9, 2016 Author Posted July 9, 2016 Ken You can see how I am, the last bit should read Windows 7 Pro and Windows 10 Pro also Office 2010 Pro and ignore the it's because I'd typed the reply on a word document then copied and pasted it onto this site, don't laugh but I was having difficulty in knowing what to press in order to send the message and I'm going to install Windows and Office on my computer:confused: Quote
KenB Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 Hi Clive, The 6-33 am recorded on the other site could be an incorrect time on their server [ unlikely ] or a completely different time zone if you say you posted them at the same time. No matter - I accept that you were not wasting my time :) Re Amazon: Anybody can register with Amazon and sound like a legitimate company. The can operate from home or even a garden shed. You are not to know. I had occasion to complain to Amazon re. my account being hacked on one occasion - got nowhere!! They even blamed me for making my details public !!! They are not as reputable as eBay I am sorry to say. Personally I wouldn't bother with M$ and their very expensive Office software. Give Open Office a try. It looks and feels like M$ Office. Totally free. It is also compatible with M$ Office - so original Office files will open in Open Office. You can save files in Open Office format [ can't open with M$ Office ] or choose to save them in M$ format. Also lots of forums and tutorials if you cannot find how to do a specific task. You can give it a try - if it doesn't fit the bill [ I can see no reason why it will not ] leave it on your system and install M$ Office. I stopped using M$ Office years ago. click here No need to download the Language Pack. skyhawk2016 Posted July 9, 2016 Author Posted July 9, 2016 Hi Ken I’m glad we got things sorted out I don’t like to think I’ve alienated someone it’s not a good way of going about getting someone’s help. I’m thinking of writing a book on how to gain friends and influence people It took me long enough to reply to you, I’d typed the message on the forum and promptly managed to lose the lot that’s why I did it in a word document then pasted it onto the forum, I didn’t want to get cramp in fingers having to type it a third time How on earth people hack into systems I just don’t know, I can’t hack my way into my own computer. Thanks for your reply and the link, I will certainly have a look at Open Office, up until the moment of going to press the cheapest I’ve found MS Office Pro 2010 for 2 PCs 1 User is £299.99 obviously, it’s : ORIGIN IRELAND. Cheers Clive Quote
KenB Posted July 10, 2016 Posted July 10, 2016 I’m glad we got things sorted out No worries Clive - I throw my rattle out of the pram from time to time :) Give Open Office a try and save yourself £300 :) :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!
