Maurice56 Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Hi This is going to be slow and painful. I have used computers for years but only really word, excel and database, never had the interest to delve much further. Apart from this one (an impulse buy) an ebook or netbook Asus sonic master thing; which isn't capable of doing much but is the first one i've had since my Acer laptop's ac/dc plug stopped taking a charge three or four years ago and is now stored in the attic. I've now retired and am using this machine to catch up with online buying, banking etc. whilst waiting for my Acer to self heal. I have at least a couple of questions which will determine my next step. Please bear in mind that I'm old, live in the past, have a valve transistor radio and drive a 1972 Triumph but am happy with this, so I need simplicity initially. My much younger Dutch girlfriend has a desktop gaming machine purchased several years ago which was top of the range at the time, for playing online World of Warcraft which she was going to throw out and I wondered if it could be adapted for my use. It is however in Dutch and I have been told I would need to install an English OS system, how do I know which system would be compatible with the hardware installed? Would windows ME or 98 (which are nice and cheap) run on such a thing? I think my Acer ran Vista something, would that be better, although more expensive? The other question, which may seem silly, is how trustworthy are computer repair shops as I was quoted a while ago £60 to replace the ac/dc port on the Acer but didn't feel comfortable with a stranger looking at my personal letters, household accounts etc. if I could get into it then I'd delete anything I felt was private. Thanks in advance to anyone who may reply maurice56 Quote
ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted July 11, 2016 ExTS Admin Posted July 11, 2016 Hi maurice and welcome to FPCH. girlfriend has a desktop gaming machine purchased several years ago which was top of the range at the time, for playing online World of Warcraft which she was going to throw out and I wondered if it could be adapted for my use. So can we assume this system runs Win7? I have been told I would need to install an English OS system, Probably not. If it's Win7 it would depend of which version.... If it's 'Ultimate', there are 35 languages to chose from, they are listed under "Language Packs" at this website: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd744369%28WS.10%29.aspx Would windows ME or 98 (which are nice and cheap) run on such a thing? Nice to see you have a sense of humor. Don't even think about those. So you need to know what Operating System is installed on the Dutch PC. Quote Member of:UNITE
