First post, hope I am in right place.

I have a laptop with 1000's pics that I would like to save and share.

Would SD cards be suitable for doing this?

Like to watch on tv and share with others on their tv.

Are they reliable?

Do I have to format card on laptop? If so would this render it useless on other laptops

How long could I expect a sd card to last

Hi Zippy,

Would SD cards be suitable for doing this?

I've never used SD cards for backups.... not every PC or Laptop has a slot for them.

I use either USB sticks or an external HD.

USB sticks are a lot handier to use and store.

I bought a load of lanyards.... I clip the usb sticks to them and then hang them up by my PC.

Most TV's now have a USB port, so adding pics or videos to be played back on a TV isn't a problem.

I tend to do this with saved films.

If you use USB sticks, they'll be ready formatted to fat32.....

Fat32 will only support individual files up to 4GB in size and volumes up to 2TB in size.

For example, if you had a large video file over 4GB in size, you just couldn’t save it on the FAT32 file system.

But anything less than a 4GB file will be fine.

.

FAT32 doesn’t support file permissions, so they'll play on any system.

Expect an SD card to last about 5 years.

A USB stick about 10 years.

But there are no guarantees... it would depend on how many times they are used (over written) and how they're stored.
