Having just updated my old laptop from XP to W7 I am having an issue with updates. It simply refuses to do anything. On clicking on look for updates the progress bar reports "checking for updates" but hours later nothing has happened. It also always reports "never" for most recent check and for updates installed. What is going on and how do I fix it? The install is registered and the licence key verified. What am I doing wrong?

Hi joddle,

It could be that part of install program has become corrupt.

or you may need a newer version of the Windows Update Agent.

These 2 links will explain everything and both have automated fixes to help.

How do I reset Windows Update components?

How to update the Windows Update Agent to the latest version

Or the quick way to get SP1 is to download it manually: Install Windows 7 Service Pack 1

All links are to the M$ site.
