bj43cj47 Posted October 14, 2016 Posted October 14, 2016 Hello all, I've been asked to send an email in Word version, but I don't know how to do this. In fact I don't see Word anywhere on my laptop. I've tried a few online tutorials, but just get lost in the maze of instructions. So I'm hoping I can be shown where it is or how to download it. I'm not a whizz-kid on computers, okay, so I'm a numpty:confused: so any help in very easy stages would be appreciated. Thanks in anticipation. Quote
ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted October 15, 2016 ExTS Admin Posted October 15, 2016 Hi bj43cj47 To find out if Word is installed is easy..... If you are showing the Desktop.... Press the 'Windows' key on the keyboard and then click on the down Arrow ( bottom left ) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/wordpic1_zpshcpmqnjg.png This will fetch up the App list. Scroll along to the Microsoft Office section ( if there ) and Word will be listed. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/starbuck50/wordpic2_zps3kpoecpi.png If it's not listed... it's not installed. Word comes as part of the Microsoft Office package, but can also be downloaded as a stand alone program. You can get a trial version here: Microsoft Word 2013 Free Trial You could also install Open Office Open office documents are compatible with Microsoft Office..... So if you were to send an Open Office word document to someone with Word installed.... they would be able to open the document. Quote Member of:UNITE
KenB Posted October 22, 2016 Posted October 22, 2016 Hi Bit late with this reply but it may help others ........ In addition to what Starbuck has said: The M$ Office package comes at a cost [ very expensive if it isn't on your system already] There is a totally free option [ not a trial version ] - Open Office. This is absolutely free and is compatible with MS Word etc. Available here - click here Download the full installation Just one thing to remember: If you are using the "Word" [ text ] option and you need to open the saved version with a Microsoft version you will need to select this when saving. Microsoft uses a .doc or .docx extension Open Office saves by default to .odt This sounds complicated - but it isn't. There is a down-arrow that you click when you have named the file and then you select Microsoft Word 97 / 2000 Simple as that. bj43cj47 Posted October 22, 2016 Author Posted October 22, 2016 Thanks KenB, I replied to Starbuck, but I'm surprised that it aint there??? I'd never ignore a reply to a post where I've asked for help. Anyway, I've just followed your link & downloaded Apache, but having done that, I'm now confronted with so much gobbledegook & I still don't see where Word is available. Even if I could, I wouldn't have a clue how to use it. My OP explains my experience with PCs. I'm ok 'til sites start blinding with technology, then I give up. Quote
KenB Posted October 22, 2016 Posted October 22, 2016 I replied to Starbuck, but I'm surprised that it aint there??? I can't explain this - sorry :( You should have an Open Office logo on your desktop. If you click on this it will take you to a box with options in it. http://cdn.portableapps.com/OpenOfficePortable.png Double left click [mouse] or tap the laptop mousepad on "Text Document" which will be top left. You will then see this: The pulsing curser - top left - is where the typing takes place. Try pressing some keys. The Back Space key will delete when you are ready to. If you want capital letters - hold the Shift key down and type. If you hit the Enter / Return key it takes you to a new line. To save what you have typed click on "File" [ top left ] http://static.commentcamarche.net/ccm.net/pictures/7Tm5fPs5-preb1-s-.png Click on "Save As" Give the file a name. Select where you want to save it to [ Desktop may be the best option ] This is where it says "Save In" - click on the down arrow to find "Desktop" or "Documents" or wherever you want to save it to. To save in Microsoft format - Click on the down-arrow [ shown above] Then click on the Microsoft 97 / 2000 option [ if you want the file to be able to be read by somebody with MS Word ] Then click on Save. If you leave it without selecting MS 97/2000 there is no problem you will still be able to open it again later. This is basically all you need. bj43cj47 Posted October 22, 2016 Author Posted October 22, 2016 Thanks KenB, I'll give it a go tomorrow. Quote
bj43cj47 Posted October 24, 2016 Author Posted October 24, 2016 Hmmm! There isn't an "Open Office" logo to be seen. I've looked through the programmes etc no joy! Methinks "Plan 2" is needed. Quote
KenB Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 Hi, I'm now confronted with so much gobbledegook & I still don't see where Word is available This implied that you had installed it. Did you install after downloading ? If you did there should be an icon [ logo ] on your desktop. If you didn't - go to Downloads - it will be there. Click on the download file and it should install from there. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!
