Hi Peeps, haven't a clue what's going on here. I run windows updates just to see if anything was ready to be updated. But nothing happened, it just kept running for hours. dots flying across the screen, but didn't say " no updates found " theere was no cancel or stop button either. Has there been any changes that I've not heard of ? only thing I've done is update live updater for acer. I didn't even know I had this on my laptop, but it was there ok. in the end I went in to "task manager...services and stoped the windows updater. I then had another go at looking for the updates again, but its playing up still. any ideas guys !

Hi pitfall

To be honest, my Win8.1 system is exactly the same.

I have one hell of a job trying to get the updates.

I've tried allsorts, but nothing seems to improve it.

By all means go through the steps in the link below .... hopefully something may work for you.

Ultimate Guide: Fix Windows Update Errors in Window 8.1 and Windows 8

Makes you wonder if M$ are messing with this so that everyone will upgrade their systems.

when I started my laptop up tonight, windows updater was still looking for updates :-( I checked back after doing this fix, and it's stopped now. I don't think I'll try running it again tonight lol may be tomorrow ;-) But I don't think I've fixed the problem yet :-( I think I'll try next month to get any updates and see what happens

I see no reason to stop using it.

I still have a win 7 system which I still use a few times a week.

As long as you have good security installed and use common sense when on the internet, you shouldn't have any problem.

Seems a few others have had the same problem:

Take this one for instance: KB3205401

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-update/kb3205401-december-update-fails-to-install-with/b9369e9b-2ac4-4c2c-98c3-ee45fb3cf79d

Have you tried downloading and installing it manually?

It's available from: http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=kb3205401

You'll want the 64bit version.

Any idea what this is " and what to do about it

In many instances, InstallShield packaged programs are distributed as self-extracting zip files.

These can be pre-extracted using any unzip program to provide access to the standard InstallShield setup.exe.

It looks as though 7 Zip is the program used for this on your system.

But as I can only see .... {B46EEA36-0B71-4A4E-AE41-872

I can't see what program it refers to.

I'd need to see the whole numbers/characters inside the 'braces' to determine that.
