anjoed Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 I have a Dell Optiplex 260 w/WinXP- yesterday, my wife was online and having troubles, did a lot of things, ended up at System Restore. Now, the machine will start, get to the point of showing the wallpaper, but no icons, start menu, task bar, quick launch.... ZERO. I have tried every last thing I can think of but still nothing. Any help, suggestions out there? I will appreciate ANYTHING. Quote

anjoed Posted March 2, 2008 Author Posted March 2, 2008 Thanks Seth- I did that, but no change. What I am getting now is an error message that says "can't find BROWSEUI.dll. Also, after Last Good Configuration, wound up with "KEYBOARD ERROR".... Quote
Seth Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 Sometimes pressing keys while the computer is posting will result in a keyboard error. Usually this is cleared up when you restart the computer. If not, unplug the computer for 15 minutes. If you can get into Safe Mode With A command Prompt, then you can try another System Restore by typing in: %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe If not, there isn't much else you can do unless you have a dell XP cd to to run a repair installation of XP. Otherwise, you can can restore the computer back to factory condition (losing all personal data) by tapping CTRL and F11 at the same time when you see the Dell splash screen. anjoed Posted March 16, 2008 Author Posted March 16, 2008 Ongoing nasty mess Thanks very much for the help all! I thought I had it beat, but hit a wall. I quit trying to resurrect the one machine, moved the disk drive to my other machine which had been working great until the drive quit. Sounded goo,. started up correctly, all programs loaded, etc., BUT... at start up, it said I had to "ACTIVATE" my copy of Win XP before proceeding. I tried everything I could think of via internet, but in the end had to get on the phone with Microsoft. I was told they do not allow one copy of Windows to be moved/transferred to another machine. There was no way to "ACTIVATE" and move on. Again, thanks for all your help. You are all great! Quote
