Starting to feel a bit stupid here - I have 4 systems almost identical (Dell OptiPlex machines) but one of them is acting a bit strangely. When I try and power down the PC using the normal windows shutdown menu, very often nothing happens - no messages noting at all!! - it simply stays the same. However sometimes it will start to shutdown but then just stops at the shutting down screen with the little things going round and round in a circle around the shutting down message. I am then forced to press the power button the stop the machine.

The power options are set to the "balanced" (i.e. the recommended) setting and I have reset the default option but this is still happening.

Alas this particular machine is the one my kids us a lot so there is no saying if they have not changed something else without realising. - but what could cause this? Any ideas please.???

OMG -- having googled for hours and tried all sorts of things I just noticed that I have a hard disk failing !!!! - can't think why I did not see this before. The disk shows as being there but if you try and access or manage it nothing it virtually hangs the PC! The HDD is the second in the tower and is used for backing up certain older files (most of which are also backed up elsewhere thank goodness) New disk put in and problem solved!!!!! Well at least for the PC - will see if its possible to recover anything later.
