mij Posted February 23, 2017 Posted February 23, 2017 I have a new laptop and thanks to helpful posts here I have stopped nearly all of the adds. I am used to using irfanview for all pictorial stuff but up comes some unknown program. I want rid, what is it please, I'd like to zap it. Another question (if allowed), I have a desktop and have a memory stick with all linux stuff on it. I want to erase its HDD, partition it and re-install W7 home premium (I'll have to down-load the install bit as its disk came with out that) on one partition and linux on the other. Is there freebie stuff on the 'net for such? jim Quote
Starbuck Posted February 23, 2017 Posted February 23, 2017 (edited) Hi Jim, but up comes some unknown program. I want rid, what is it please, I'd like to zap it. Without a name, we'd just be guessing here. Can you take a screenshot so that we can see exactly what program is trying to open. or.... If you click Start >> Settings >> System >> Default Apps and then look under Photo Viewer ... this will tell you want the default program is set to. You can of course change this to whatever you prefer. This is just me......... I never click on a pic to open it anyway. I right click on the pic and then choose what program I want to open it with. Sometimes it'll be Paint, sometimes Office Picture Manager... it all depend on what I want to do with the pic. http://i.imgur.com/XjUF1gQ.png Another question (if allowed), I have a desktop and have a memory stick with all linux stuff on it. Is there freebie stuff on the 'net for such? Sorry I'm a bit lost here. Is it the Desktop HDD that you want to partition? What Operating System is on the HDD at the moment? So is it a dual boot that you want to create on the Desktop system? (Win7 and Linux) Edited February 23, 2017 by Starbuck Quote Member of:UNITE

(Win7 and Linux) Thanks for that, I followed what you said and found the prog. I wanted and indicated that as default. They didn't give the picture viewer a name just that it was suitable to view W10 pictures :D. Yes it is a dual partition and dual boot that I want on the HDD of the desktop. I am hoping to get W7 home (the CD disk that came with it) operating on it first then when successful try it with linux. What is on it ATM? Linux......and I have no idea what version either. It is something I downloaded and then erased my W7 thinking I was installing it on the CD. Oh woe is me.......:eek2: Jim.. Quote
Starbuck Posted February 24, 2017 Posted February 24, 2017 I followed what you said and found the prog. I wanted and indicated that as default. That's good :) Yes it is a dual partition and dual boot that I want on the HDD of the desktop. Ok, not too difficult. One of my systems is a triple boot (Win7, Win8.1 and Win10 ) Dual booting on a Desktop is actually really handy. Just remember that the 2 OS will share the hardware, but apart from that the 2 are completely separate and have to be treated as such. What is on it ATM? Linux...... Ok, you'll need to install Win7 first.... and then add Linux. Win7 will then already have the tools installed, that you'll need to create an extra partition. These 2 links will explain everything you need to know: The Ultimate Windows 7 and Ubuntu Linux Dual Boot Guide How to Dual-boot Linux and Windows (on a PC with Windows 7 already installed) I downloaded and then erased my W7 thinking I was installing it on the CD. I had to get a laptop with windows instead of one with linux........it upset my plans. The router gave up the ghost just before that and I could not get back into the site I use most as it is written in such a way that I cannot get through to the admin side to tell them their system is broken. It is staffed by volunteers........obviously unable to sort it. Do I need to erase all from the HDD first? Jim. Quote
Starbuck Posted February 24, 2017 Posted February 24, 2017 (edited) Hi Jim, When you install Win7 (boot from the installation disc ) you will be given the option of formatting the hdd. This is the best option and guarantees a clean install. How To Clean Install Windows 7 Edited February 24, 2017 by Starbuck Quote Member of:UNITE
mij Posted February 25, 2017 Author Posted February 25, 2017 Ok, that bit was alright until it found that the NTFS had been converted to FAT32. I have DBAN on a CD and flash drive but neither wants to go to erase the disk. Jim. . Quote
mij Posted February 25, 2017 Author Posted February 25, 2017 It stopped and said 'Select driver to be installed'. There is always a request that I do not understand. It says that I must run Windows installation. I presume I can get that off the 'net. Jim (gone looking) Quote

mij Posted February 25, 2017 Author Posted February 25, 2017 (edited) So what was you doing when this message came up? ..... running the Windows Installation? Yes---well trying to. It did not work either way . I presumed that any required drivers would have been in the downloadable installation bit or on the disk that came with the rig. I was wrong on both accounts --- as I frequently am with these things. Not logical at all. Well not our logic anyway. Jim Edited February 25, 2017 by mij Quote
mij Posted February 26, 2017 Author Posted February 26, 2017 I have been googling again today for an iso (I have no clue to what that is) of the drivers for W7 but all I got was effectively another copy of W7 without signed drivers. Not what I wanted. Where on earth do I get them from? Signed windows drivers that is. Jim Quote
Starbuck Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 Hi Jim, where are you getting your Win7 ISO from? This is the recommended location (the official M$ site ): Are you creating a dvd or usb version of the installation? Download Windows 7 Disc Images (ISO Files) Also make sure when creating the dvd or usb ... that it's a bootable version. Quote Member of:UNITE
mij Posted February 26, 2017 Author Posted February 26, 2017 (edited) Hi Jim, where are you getting your Win7 ISO from? It is from the same site as you quoted below, it gave me the same results as I got on my windows seven disk - with out signed drivers. This is the recommended location (the official M$ site ): Download Windows 7 Disc Images (ISO Files) Are you creating a dvd or usb version of the installation? I was just clicking and dragging them to a DVD . Reading the instructions more carefully I am supposed to burn them into an ISO (don't know how to do that - afraid I might lose W10 on this new laptop) Also make sure when creating the dvd or usb ... that it's a bootable version. The learning curve gets steeper? Having said that the program was very much like my W7 DVD. Well it acted the same, bootable or not when I attempted to put W7 drivers (that is what I thought it was) in my desktop with it. Jim Edited February 26, 2017 by mij Quote
Starbuck Posted February 27, 2017 Posted February 27, 2017 Hi Jim, I was just clicking and dragging them to a DVD That's why you keep getting the driver error then. The ISO has to be burnt to a dvd as an image. Reading the instructions more carefully I am supposed to burn them into an ISO (don't know how to do that) It's quite easy really. Your Win10 can be used to download and burn the ISO. Win10 has burning capability. Once the Image has been burnt to a dvd, remove the dvd and use this to boot the other system. It should then run the Win7 installation. These links will explain things and will help explain the burning process using Win10.. Burning a Windows 7 ISO File on a DVD How to Burn ISO Files in Windows 10 Don't Download the ReimagePlus program mentioned in the link... it's NOT needed.(it's just an advert) The learning curve gets steeper? After using and working with Computers for the last 20 years.... I'm still learning new things. But the learning curve will start to level out .... eventually :) Quote Member of:UNITE
mij Posted February 27, 2017 Author Posted February 27, 2017 (edited) Hi Jim, That's why you keep getting the driver error then. The ISO has to be burnt to a dvd as an image. I am not given the option to burn to the DVD disk and if I want to format it, it says 'please put in a disk' then ejects the clean one I put in. Have I possibly deleted the 'burn to dvd' option? I did do a lot of deleting to rid myself of adverts. Your Win10 can be used to download and burn the ISO. Win10 has burning capability. SWMBO was able to burn her music to a cd using her media player in W7. Once the Image has been burnt to a dvd, remove the dvd and use this to boot the other system. It should then run the Win7 installation. I will get there one day but it is a slow process. Jim. PS As an after thought I have been trying with Sony 4.7GB DVD+R and Ridisc 8xDVD+RW 4.7GB disks. I am getting the same response with each. Edited February 27, 2017 by mij Quote

mij Posted February 28, 2017 Author Posted February 28, 2017 Having tried again today it struck me that I may be doing this incorrectly - do I need to burn the iso file from the MS site- that is not copy it to the desktop first? Jim. Quote
Starbuck Posted February 28, 2017 Posted February 28, 2017 Hi Jim, You need to download the ISO file first to the desktop and then select it from there to make the image. Quote Member of:UNITE

mij Posted February 28, 2017 Author Posted February 28, 2017 Hi Jim, You need to download the ISO file first to the desktop and then select it from there to make the image. . The reason that I ask that is because it changes its name and no longer has the tag iso in it. When I tried it today I was informed by the program that 'this is not an iso file The file is called Win7_HomePrem_SP1_English_COEM_x64 and I can see it has changed its name. Jim Quote
Starbuck Posted March 1, 2017 Posted March 1, 2017 Hi Jim, Not sure what's going on there then. According to the Microsoft page ... and this one.... https://www.howtogeek.com/186775/how-to-download-windows-7-8-and-8.1-installation-media-legally/ (Scroll down the page for the Win7 instructions) the download should be an ISO file. Did you enter a product key on the first page of the Microsoft download ? Also it seems that the download only lasts for 24 hours.... so has to be used by then. If not, you'll need to download a fresh copy. Quote Member of:UNITE
