mij Posted March 2, 2017 Author Posted March 2, 2017 I have just tried playing a DVD and it does not recognize the disk. It did play that same disk - it must be something I did then! Jim Or perhaps there is something wrong with the disk? I have emailed the supplier asking them what should be done. Jim Quote

mij Posted March 5, 2017 Author Posted March 5, 2017 The weekend intervenes and my patience is wearing thinner. I tried a restore but nothing before the 22/2/17 date. I'm not sure when this happened ( losing the burn ability on the optical disk that is) but I got error 0x80070091 and that restore did not complete. The 22/2/17 was two weeks ago and it took simply ages on the step 'initiating restore files'. I shall just have to wait for tomorrow. jim PS I did google that error number but am no wiser despite the answers that solved some ones similar problems. Quote
ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted March 5, 2017 ExTS Admin Posted March 5, 2017 Hi Jim, but I got error 0x80070091 and that restore did not complete. The 22/2/17 was two weeks ago and it took simply ages on the step 'initiating restore files'. Just to clarify ..... you tried to run the restore point from 22/2/17 ... it took ages trying to initiate the restore files and then it gave the 0x80070091 error? Is this the cd/dvd burner on the Win10 system? If so, let's run chkdsk.... just to check the drive. Click on File Explorer Right-click the drive you want to check (usually the C Drive), and then choose Properties. http://i.imgur.com/zUzSYKB.png Click on the Tools tab Under Error Checking.. Click Check Windows may inform you that it hasn’t found any errors on the drive. You can still perform a manual scan by clicking Scan drive. (which I recommend) http://i.imgur.com/dXW7A2B.png This will first perform a scan without attempting any repairs, so it will not restart your PC at this point. If the quick disk scan reveals any problems, Windows will present that option to you. Also, try the system restore again.... but this time in Safe Mode. Accessing Safe Mode in Win10 is a different process than earlier versions of Windows. If you need instructions on how to access Safe Mode, I've written a tutorial Here Quote Member of:UNITE
mij Posted March 6, 2017 Author Posted March 6, 2017 Hi Jim, Just to clarify ..... you tried to run the restore point from 22/2/17 ... it took ages trying to initiate the restore files and then it gave the 0x80070091 error? Is this the cd/dvd burner on the Win10 system? It was with defender on the W10 system. If so, let's run chkdsk.... just to check the drive. Click on File Explorer Right-click the drive you want to check (usually the C Drive), and then choose Properties. Click on the Tools tab Under Error Checking.. Click Check Windows may inform you that it hasn’t found any errors on the drive. You can still perform a manual scan by clicking Scan drive. (which I recommend) This will first perform a scan without attempting any repairs, so it will not restart your PC at this point. If the quick disk scan reveals any problems, Windows will present that option to you. I did this and all was ok. Also, try the system restore again.... but this time in Safe Mode. I will try that tomorrow. We are out until mid afternoon so I may miss the support emails. See, I have hopes LOL. Accessing Safe Mode in Win10 is a different process than earlier versions of Windows. Yes, I was missing the procedure to get out of safe mode. The windows sign + R needs to go on the end of your tutorial. Jim Quote
mij Posted March 6, 2017 Author Posted March 6, 2017 I left it (early this morning - like 02.30) on down loading, as I thought, the W7 iso file on this page https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7 and later when I awoke and checked it was not an iso file it was Win7_HomePrem_SP1_English_COEM_64 yet when I googled for a W7 ISO it came up with the above page and the file offered ended with the letters ISO......... Very confusing. Jim. Quote
mij Posted March 6, 2017 Author Posted March 6, 2017 For some unknown reason a part of my earliar post is missing. In it I said that in my enthusiastic deletion of ad-type images/software I may have deleted helpful programs like chkdsk and scandisk. Looking for these it appears they are available free if one gives of your personal data. Other than that a fee is required. Jim. Quote
ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted March 6, 2017 ExTS Admin Posted March 6, 2017 Hi Jim, Yes, I was missing the procedure to get out of safe mode. The windows sign + R needs to go on the end of your tutorial Why would I need to put the windows sign + R instructions at the end? Anyone reading the tutorial will have already read those instructions at the beginning on how to get into Msconfig, so presumably they will still remember. http://i.imgur.com/L3CVmm0.png In it I said that in my enthusiastic deletion of ad-type images/software I may have deleted helpful programs like chkdsk and scandisk You have just run chkdsk ..... anyway those features are part of the OS and can't be removed. (accidentally or intentionally ) When you say 'scandisc' I presume that you mean 'scannow'(SFC) .... that is a part of the OS as well and can't be removed. Looking for these it appears they are available free if one gives of your personal data. Other than that a fee is required. This is obviously a con. As you can't remove them.... you'll never need to get them again. Anyway, Win10 gives you the easy option of resetting the OS ( re-installing afresh) which will replace anything missing. If chkdsk wasn't on your system, you couldn't have just run it!! If you ever wanted (or needed ) to run 'scannow' ..... my tutorial Here will explain how to run that. later when I awoke and checked it was not an iso file it was Win7_HomePrem_SP1_English_COEM_64 Right click on the downloaded file and select 'Properties' What is the 'file type' of the download? It'll tell you on the 'General' tab. http://i.imgur.com/pl1gYhU.png Quote Member of:UNITE
mij Posted March 7, 2017 Author Posted March 7, 2017 Thank you for the response Starbuck. It is a relief to learn that I cannot remove those helpful programs, I thought I had scanned with defender though. Perhaps not. Ok on the way out of safe mode except with thickies like me that wouldn't expect that instruction at the begining :). Thanks for the tutorial on SFC /scan, I needed that. Neither the retailer nor Amazon have responded today, I had to go out but there was nothing waiting for me when I got back. Thanks for the instruction on using the file info. I did find out the kind of file and it had ISO at the end so that seems ok then. It must be my disk that is toast. I cannot use SWMBOs Dell as the machine ejects any disk put into it. Some day I might fit a new disk in it. My desktop ( that I want the W7 ISO file for) is linux of some version, so that can't help either. Jim. PS A thought, if I cleared off a memory stick could I burn that W7 file to it using a USB connection? If that is so what would be the procedure please? Quote

It must be my disk that is toast.Ok, if the file type is ISO then the download is fine. As you say, it must be the disk drive that is the problem. PS A thought, if I cleared off a memory stick could I burn that W7 file to it using a USB connection? Yes that's possible. It does state on the download page: If you need to install or reinstall Windows 7 you can use this page to download a disc image (ISO file) to create your own installation media using either a USB flash drive or a DVD. If you want to install Windows 7 from a USB drive, the best way is to use the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool to put that ISO file onto a USB drive. Full instructions are on the download link, plus the procedure is also on the earlier link I gave you: https://www.howtogeek.com/186775/how-to-download-windows-7-8-and-8.1-installation-media-legally/ Quote Member of:UNITE
mij Posted March 7, 2017 Author Posted March 7, 2017 Thanks for the response, I'll try that in the morning. I find mornings are best these days :). I want it for the DeskTop really, that still has a version of linux on it, not for this lap top. Can I presume that it will change FAT32 to NTFS at that time? I say that because it cropped up some time before when I tried to load windows seven. I do not know how to do that in linux. Jim. Quote
mij Posted March 8, 2017 Author Posted March 8, 2017 I just cannot believe my eyes. The disk has played a DVD tonight, the one that it played after it was initially delivered/opened, but it would not recognize, let alone play, last night. It has also formatted a disk but not of another of a different make. As I see it diagnosis would be in one of three avenues:- 1) in the hard ware, perhaps a connection making/breaking or a fault with the disk. 2) A software problem, that is a bug or something on the operational side. 3) The sensors give incorrect information for whatever reason. How does one go about determining the cause? Is itjust substitution? Jim. Quote

mij Posted March 9, 2017 Author Posted March 9, 2017 Thank you very much. All unky dory now, reformatted the hdd on the desktop and W7 reinstalled and it feels ever so much more comfortable. Jim Quote
