I have just tried playing a DVD and it does not recognize the disk. It did play that same disk - it must be something I did then!

The weekend intervenes and my patience is wearing thinner. I tried a restore but nothing before the 22/2/17 date. I'm not sure when this happened ( losing the burn ability on the optical disk that is) but I got error 0x80070091 and that restore did not complete. The 22/2/17 was two weeks ago and it took simply ages on the step 'initiating restore files'.

 

I shall just have to wait for tomorrow.

PS I did google that error number but am no wiser despite the answers that solved some ones similar problems.

Just to clarify ..... you tried to run the restore point from 22/2/17 ... it took ages trying to initiate the restore files and then it gave the 0x80070091 error?

 

Is this the cd/dvd burner on the Win10 system?

 

If so, let's run chkdsk.... just to check the drive.

• Click on File Explorer
  
• Right-click the drive you want to check (usually the C Drive), and then choose Properties.

Windows may inform you that it hasn’t found any errors on the drive.

You can still perform a manual scan by clicking Scan drive. (which I recommend)

It was with defender on the W10 system.

I left it (early this morning - like 02.30) on down loading, as I thought, the W7 iso file on this page

and later when I awoke and checked it was not an iso file it was

Win7_HomePrem_SP1_English_COEM_64

yet when I googled for a W7 ISO it came up with the above page and the file offered ended with the letters ISO.........

Very confusing.

Looking for these it appears they are available free if one gives of your personal data. Other than that a fee is required.

Why would I need to put the windows sign + R instructions at the end?

Anyone reading the tutorial will have already read those instructions at the beginning on how to get into Msconfig, so presumably they will still remember.

You have just run chkdsk ..... anyway those features are part of the OS and can't be removed. (accidentally or intentionally )

When you say 'scandisc' I presume that you mean 'scannow'(SFC) .... that is a part of the OS as well and can't be removed.

This is obviously a con.

As you can't remove them.... you'll never need to get them again.

Anyway, Win10 gives you the easy option of resetting the OS ( re-installing afresh) which will replace anything missing.

If chkdsk wasn't on your system, you couldn't have just run it!!

 

If you ever wanted (or needed ) to run 'scannow' ..... my tutorial Here will explain how to run that.

Right click on the downloaded file and select 'Properties'

What is the 'file type' of the download?

It'll tell you on the 'General' tab.

Thank you for the response Starbuck. It is a relief to learn that I cannot remove those helpful programs, I thought I had scanned with defender though. Perhaps not.

Ok on the way out of safe mode except with thickies like me that wouldn't expect that instruction at the begining :).

Thanks for the tutorial on SFC /scan, I needed that.

Neither the retailer nor Amazon have responded today, I had to go out but there was nothing waiting for me when I got back.

Thanks for the instruction on using the file info. I did find out the kind of file and it had ISO at the end so that seems ok then. It must be my disk that is toast. I cannot use SWMBOs Dell as the machine ejects any disk put into it. Some day I might fit a new disk in it. My desktop ( that I want the W7 ISO file for) is linux of some version, so that can't help either.

Ok, if the file type is ISO then the download is fine.

As you say, it must be the disk drive that is the problem.

Yes that's possible.

It does state on the download page:

If you need to install or reinstall Windows 7 you can use this page to download a disc image (ISO file) to create your own installation media using either a USB flash drive or a DVD.

If you want to install Windows 7 from a USB drive, the best way is to use the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool to put that ISO file onto a USB drive.

As I see it diagnosis would be in one of three avenues:-

1) in the hard ware, perhaps a connection making/breaking or a fault with the disk.

2) A software problem, that is a bug or something on the operational side.

3) The sensors give incorrect information for whatever reason.

How does one go about determining the cause? Is itjust substitution?

You will need to reformat the HDD before installing Win7.
