This particular problem was only noticed this morning.

One of the front USB ports does not work with a flash drive but works with a camera.

The speakers emit a sound when the camera is connected and switched on but no sound when the flash drive is inserted.

The USB's to the rear seem to be unaffected and I hear a confirming 'dong' when I insert the flash drive..

Hi Jim

One of the front USB ports does not work with a flash drive but works with a camera.

Just to confirm - do the other USB ports at the front work OK ?

Is the Flash drive OK in the other USB ports at the front?

It sounds like a power problem with that particular port.

The ports operate on 5v and different devices require different amounts of current.

It may be that this particular port is struggling to supply the current needed by the Flash Drive.

Yes, there are two at the front and four at the rear. I have been using this front port mainly for the camera.

Yes, it normally has my USB mouse in there but I have just transferred the mouse to one in the rear.

It used to work the flash drives and the other one on the front is ok with the flash drive in it. Is it something I can see to myself or just transfer things around so that it is used only for the camera - which still works in there. It does have its own power I suppose. I do have a digital multimeter and could read the volts availabe if I knew where to hook it.

Jim.

PS Just ran Speccy and it reports on the flash drive in the 'duff' port' but it doesn't work it at all.

The USB port utilises 4 wires. If you look inside the port itself you should see the 4 connections.

Obviously you will not see the coloured wires.

The outer 2 are the 5v connections and the centre two are the data connections.

If you wish you could try taking a voltage reading from the faulty port.

You would need to be very careful with the multimeter leads.

The reading should be 5v within a close tolerance.

If it reads 4v say then this is not within the acceptable limits.

Thanks for the reply KenB. I will try that a little later today. It is working to some extent as I have swopped the mouse into that port and that seems ok.

The probes on the meter are a little too big to go into the USB port.

I was hoping that I had a spare USB plug with cable attached that I could split open and use to measure the voltages, but have found none. I have been using that port for my USB mouse and it performs ok. I assume from that the memory stick/flash drive needs more than the port can supply.

Well it is working so I'll leave well alone - unless it stops working altogether.

Consider it solved, thanks.

I agree with you Jim.

If you had another similar Flash Drive or an external hard drive [ not one that uses mains power ] this would confirm it.

If you can manage with it as it is then I agree - leave well alone :)

Hmmm, Christmas day......It's early and have just realized that I left this in the air as I only use the USB from time to time. Anyway I have both here and tried them both. The alternate flash drive worked fine so tried the external but USB driven hard drive and that worked fine as well. So put in the original flash drive that started this thread and it worked as well! What? I presume from that there is probably an intermittent fault on that USB. What a run around!

I'd consider this one solved, many thanks and a merry Christmas.

Jim.
