Hi. Newbie here so please be kind.

PC running Windows 7 and never had any problems getting a wireless internet connection until now. We've just been sent a new wireless router from Talk Talk with the password and it has connected up no problem with all our phones and tablets and it did connect up with the PC straight away. Turned the PC on today and it says no connection available....see pic. I've tried everything I know but can't get it to connect. The router is in the same room and is fine with our other devices, just the PC can't find it now even though it did the first time. Please explain in the simplest of terms how I can fix this.

All help very much appreciated.

TIA.

Hi and welcome to ExTS.

We are always "kind" here :)

1. - If the router is in the same room do you have an ethernet cable [ there are often blue or yellow ] to try connecting directly between the pc and the router ?

2. - From your pic the icon that you have clicked on is not the usual "Wireless" icon - this is the default icon for a wired connection.

If you right click on this icon [ bottom right of screen ] and select "Trouble Shoot" then let the trouble shooter run.

What does it suggest as being the problem?

3. Click on the Start button [ bottom left of screen ] type in ..... devmgmt.msc ......hit the "Enter" key

Scroll down the Device Manager list and click the > next to "Network Adapters"

Are there any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs against any of the items listed?

Is there anything listed that has Wifi or wireless in the name ?

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

Hi. Thanks for replying. Tried Ethernet cable and still no luck. Nothing with yellow exclamation marks or red X's

What was the outcome of running the troubleshooter ?

It usually suggests a reason why you cannot connect.

In Device manager - which Network Adapters are listed ?

You have nothing at all in device Manager against Network Adapters ??

Please confirm.

A screen shot may help :)

If this is the case something - or somebody - has removed the drivers.

What is the make and model number of your PC.?

I may be able to locate the drivers for you to try re-installing.

When was the last time that this machine was able to connect to the internet ?

I've managed to get it running with the Ethernet cable where it wouldn't before. I can now at least get on to the internet. Still no wireless connection and it now won't allow me to do any updates even though I've re started the PC and done a system restore. Says the system restore was not successful.

We had the PC running wirelessly on a Belkin router back in December. We moved house and due to being busy it hasn't been turned on since December to do any updates (our fault I know)..... We were sent a new router by Talk Talk and everything was fine, our devices including the PC connected wirelessly without any problems. Turning on the PC the following day and we find we can not connect wirelessly or via cable (cable is now working) and it won't allow updates. Virus protection has now updated and I've run a check but no viruses found. Other things like Adobe and Java have updated successfully but Windows will not update and I can not get a wireless connection which I need to do as the PC is situated away from the router and cable won't reach.

It's a Packard Bell PC and I will post the model number when I find it.

Thanks for your help

Was told by another person online to "Go to Control Panel, then Services and then see if the Update Service is running. It will start with W" .....I can't see anywhere that says "services"?

They also said "If you type in _" Microsoft Fixit for Windows Update Windows 7" then hopefully should find the download"....have not tried this yet as only got the info late last night and by then my poor brain was jiggered.

I've been in to Device Manager list and clicked the > next to "Network Adapters"

There are no yellow exclamation marks or red Xs against any of the items listed.

There isn't anything listed that has Wifi or wireless in the name.

Will post more pics later.

Running troubleshooter without the Ethernet cable just says the Ethernet cable isn't connected.....doesn't tell me why it's not connecting wirelessly.

Will again post pics later

This is your problem.

The software that runs your wireless adapter has somehow been removed.:(

I am going to need the exact model number to locate the drivers - and even then there may be 2 or 3 options.

Regarding updates - I suggest that you look at one problem at a time.

Your wireless connection is obviously you main concern - so let's concentrate on that first.

I am away until Tuesday but I may have time to look in over the weekend :)

Hi,

Having a bit of trouble locating M3720 wireless drivers on Packard Bell site [ must be old ]

I did find drivers here - http://www.driverscape.com/manufacturers/packard+bell/laptops-desktops/ixtreme-m3720/1115

Try downloading the Atheros drivers for your system [ assuming Win 7 64bit ]

Download and install.

Check in Device Manager that they are showing with no errors.

Try wireless connection again.

On the plus side, I've managed to do all the Windows updates....there were 28 of them. So at least that's solved but only via an Ethernet cable.

i still have the Belkin discs for the wireless router that it worked off before...do you think it would be worth using them to see if that will restore the driver?

No I don't think so - I think your problem is getting the correct Wireless Driver software

We have tried Atheros - this needs deleting from Device Manager.

Go back to Device manager Click the > next to Network Adapters then right click on the Atheros driver and select "Uninstall"

Go back to the drivers site again and look for a Realtek driver [ Wireless not Ethernet ]

Download and install this.

I will see if I can find a specification for your machine to determine the type of WiFi Adapter you have.

==================================

Try this [ not at home to confirm ]

Start > type in msinfo32 and hit Enter

System Information should show.

Click on "Components" and see if this shows the Wireless Adapter
