Hafoi Bin Ereafower Posted September 19, 2018 Posted September 19, 2018 (edited) What Ho Chaps, My aged Samsung laptop finally gave up the ghost some months ago and have been using a tablet for "internety" things - till I inherited a rather nice Dell Inspiron lappy a couple of weeks ago. It's got an i3 and more than enough RAM thingummys to satisfy me - - only problem was it had W7 and so I thought I'd update it - so off I went to the Microsoft website to download W10. Yes I know they'd said free versions weren't available any more but I'd read if you update the media files it gives you access to the W10 update and so it proved. Anyhoo - - my new W10 OS is not (or appears not) to be behaving itself in that it freezes, crashes (i.e. black screen) every so often - sometimes with pop ups which say things like "Logitech file caused prog to stop". So I've used Revo Uninstaller to get rid of everything Logitech (it was for an external mouse which I don't use) and it's still happening. Now in fairness to W10 - - when I first used the laptop with W7 it did crash a couple of times so there may be something inherited from the previous OS - - Oh - the other thing it does which is very strange when the system boots it sometimes takes a very long time - plus asks you to press F1 or F2 annnnnd about every third time it boots it plays the W7 intro jingle. It's as though it starts to boot 7 then goes through to 10 So dear chaps - my question is - do you think I've been infected (Windows Defender doesn't think so) or is it best just to do a complete refresh of W10 not saving any files from previously - - I have got back a back up. Yes when you do an update you sometimes do inherent the previous versions issues. Do you know if the system has a HDD or SDD? If it is a HDD check and make sure it is free for any issues and not failing. If you have the information you want to would do a complete wipe and reinstall. Pretty sure it's got a mechanical hard drive - not one of these new fangled solid thingummys. Which leads me to my next question - if it's an intermittent fault how can I tell its the drive that's faulty ? Regards a "complete wipe and reinstall" is that - going back to the MS web site and downloading the software for W10 again or can it be done using Refresh/Recovery already on the system ? Run a Check Disk on the drive. Let us know if you get stuck and or have any question. While in windows press the Windows Key + X which will open a shortcut list. Look for Command Prompt (Administrator) and select that Once it opens Type chkdsk /r Wen the following screen comes up press Y for Yes so it will run Type exit Shut Down the system then power it back on. It will take it a while to complete depending on how large the drive is so please be patient. Do not interrupt it or you may ruin the drive. Quote "Confucius could give answer to that. Hafoi Bin Ereafower Posted September 21, 2018 Author Posted September 21, 2018 What Ho Rustys, Excellent description of what to do - so much so it went swimmingly until the last bit of how to get the text file onto the desktop i.e. after cutting and pasting the instruction into the powershell screen hitting the enter button does not produce a text file on the desktop. The check disc went well taking about 35 minutes - just no text file - - well - one I can find anyway. System does seem a bit smother though although might be my imagination. Should I do anything else or is it worth moving onto replacing/refreshing W10 - - or what I'm tempted to do is use it and see if the check disc has worked ? Oh - and one thing I find strange when digging around for the text file I have a desktop icon on my toolbar bottom of screen in clicking on it I've the usual list - but two control panel listings - one of which if clicked on give the usual windows rectangular pop up with "adjust your computers setting" then small pics with System and security etc. The other control panel listing has a small black arrow against it and when cursor laid over listing pop up appears with same nine sections - against which is further black arrow etc - sure you've got the picture - - - two different representations of control panel - - - could this be an indicator of some elements of W7 still being on the system and affecting the stability of the system ? Press Windows Key + X Select Event Viewer On the left expand the Windows Log folder Now Select Applications (may take it a few to load) In the middle looking under Source scroll down the list looking for Wininit Click on that and on the far right click on Copy then Copy Details as Text Now in this thread just paste the information Right click with the mouse and select paste or Press the Ctrl Key + V Should I do anything else or is it worth moving onto replacing/refreshing W10 - - or what I'm tempted to do is use it and see if the check disc has worked ?This is up to you like you stated in the original post that under Windows 7 it was starting to crash on you. My honest opinion is if there is nothing on the system that you want then I would go ahead and do a fresh install of Windows 10. Other wise we can get the data then do a fresh install of Windows 10. There is one thing that I would like to check. Yes it says Windows is Activated with a digital license I'll try the Event Viewer copy later in the day when I've a bit more time. It has crashed again a couple of times, plus getting itself mixed up i.e. no start up jingle/start up jingle, also the machine text screen appeared again asking to choose between pressing F1 for continue or F2 for set up - - - so it was my "imagination" it's working more smoothly - - Hey Ho. Regards, H B E Correct it does not show any errors with the drive. First is this still coming up? We will need to correct before install to prevent any errors happening during the install. Dell Inspiron, model 1764 Core i3 M 350 @ 2.27GHz RAM 4.0GB 64 bit x 64-based processor As previous it's been inherited from a relative - it was used on relatively low basis ordering the groceries and a few e-mails and is in fine condition. It was previously used with a Logitech bluetooth external mouse and I've removed the btooth dongle from it's port and removed all the Logitech files that Revo Unistaller could find. What could be causing the system to is the RAM is starting to go or is loose and needs to be re-seated. ERROR 0271/:Check date and time settings Press F1 to resume F2 to setup All that needs to be done is set the date and time correctly by pressing the F2 to enter the setup. Hafoi Bin Ereafower Posted September 24, 2018 Author Posted September 24, 2018 Rustys, Yes it does still crash and this morning on start up the machine text screen came up again and I pressed f2 to correct the time and date I had previously reset the time in Windows but not on this screen - - I have now changed the time on the machine text screen as well. I have restarted the laptop a couple of times and each time it has started up ok - no machine text screen and with the correct time. I will continue to close down and start up through the day to see if it crashes or restarts with the machine text screen. The only other clue I can give you which I haven't mentioned before is it has always taken a long time to shut down - on touching the close down on the start menu the screen closes and goes blank but the "On" light and the "Hard Drive Working" light continues to flash - also the fan continues to work for roughly 8 to 10 minutes. Every other laptop I've had stops working completely within at most a couple of minutes. Thank you again for your help with this. H B E Quote

Most of the start ups and use today have gone well until this evening when it crashed again and was difficult to get started again and needed two shots to get it going. I was in You Tube at the time and at other occasions it has crashed when using Google or in Gmail - - all Google offerings. Now I have read of circumstances where versions of the dear chaps at Microsoft and Googles offerings (them being at daggers drawn) have not worked as well together as in years past - - is this possibly what I am suffering from ? At this stage I think I would like to attempt a reinstall of W10 could I have your advice on how best to do this to achieve the cleanest reinstall. Regards, H B E Quote

It also crashed again badly late last night and took several goes to restart. I will go ahead and reinstall W10 and see if the crashing problem can be eradicated. Rustys Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 What we need to do is test the RAM and see if it is the cause of the system crashing. If it is the RAM then a fresh install will not help since during the the install it may crash. When the F1 and F2 show that is telling us that the CMOS battery needs to be replaced. If for that ever reason you DO NOT feel comfortable taking the system apart please let me know. Do this in a non static flat non conductive surface. Battery The battery will be a 3V CR-2032 Li-Mn button cell. Remember to discharge and remove all power. Once the battery is replace you will need to set the date and time again. RAM You will need to remove the battery from the system. Ground yourself to prevent a static discharge. Now press and hold the power button for about 20 seconds to discharge the power from the system. Then look just above the battery and remove the cover that is there to get to the RAM. Remove If there are more that one sticks present use the inner slot for testing. Take out one and restart the computer. If the problems persist, turn off the computer and take the other stick out and put back the one you took out before. Use your fingertips to carefully spread apart the securing clips on each end of the memory module connector until the memory module pops up. Gently pull the memory stick form the slot. Replacing Align the notch in the memory module with the tab in the memory module connector. Slide the memory module firmly into the slot at a 45 degree angle, and press the memory module down until it clicks into place. Hafoi Bin Ereafower Posted September 25, 2018 Author Posted September 25, 2018 What Ho You Chaps, Well, I went ahead and clean installed W10 wiping out all the files held and coming up with a system (be still my beating heart) that seems to work. So far I've just started up six times but now it's quicker to boot and it closes down in under a minute compared with 5 to 8 previously. It also seems snappier in operation - so with a fair wind and a hey-ho to the gods - we've cracked it ! I will gradually over the next few days build back in the files I want and things like Google bits I want to use - testing as I go to see if any of them interfere with the way it operates but so far so good. I will of course report back my progess and keep on the backburner Rustys your suggestion about the RAM facility and it's battery - it's the same one my watch uses ! In the meantime many thanks to Rustys and all you chaps for providing a resource which we of the less enlightened brigade need to use from time to time - as the archers of yore used to say - - "more strength to your elbow" Your's and with best wishes, H B E Quote

As previous episode - the laptop is behaving like a laptop should - starting and closing down quickly, no crashing, freezing and moving quickly (well enough for me) between screens etc. So great - except - - occasionally (particularly first thing in morning ?) still got the BIOS screen on start up saying "reset date and time" so off I went into town and followed Rustys advice to replace it and buy a button battery CR2032. Fortunately Dell on this model placed the battery under a three screw panel so after removing main battery and the panel there it was - simple job. Since fitting new battery approx 10 days ago absolutely first class - no recurring problems - so chaps feel I'm not tempting fate by saying we've cracked it ! Looking back at the saga - - as a little used laptop with an old operating system clearly there was something wrong both with the original OS and the button battery. My downloading of W10 and not doing a "clean install" exacerbated the problem and mixed the OS's - - it's no wonder it felt "poorly". Rustys' s advice to run the check disc system gave me confidence the laptop was in decent condition and redoing a clean W10 install solved most of problems - replacing the button battery did the rest.
