XP Upgrade.

Hi People:)!!!

My old xp desktop has served me well for the last several years, but now that I can't even watch tv catch up its time for a change.

I have been searching on google and youtube for some directions on how to upgrade to a newer operating system, either windows 7 or even windows 10. for free.

There is a lot of conflicting views about this, some say you can, some say you cant. then others say that you need a disc or flash drive with an ISO on it

I am still in the dark as to what to do, so I thought I would ask the forum for some advice.

as it is, I don't have a disk, or a flash drive with an ISO on it (i don't know what an ISO is anyway) and the only product key I have is on a sticker on top of my old xp

desktop.

If anyone has any ideas or advice how I can upgrade from xp I would be really appreciative. It might even stop me pulling out the small amount of hair I have left!!!

Were you thinking of updating that old XP system or getting a new system that can handle the newer version of OS?

Honest opinion buy new. Does not have to have all the bells a whistles on it just something that will do what you want it to.

XP is a very old Operating System and the hardware inside the case will be too.

You may be able to upgrade to Vista or even Win7 but certainly not Win10 due to hardware compatibility problems.

Basically, sorry to say this, but your machine has had its day.

 

Also support for XP has been removed so you are getting no security updates etc.

This means that your machine is more vulnerable.

 

I have to agree with Rustys - if you can afford a new machine you are better doing this than spending money on an out-dated system.

Scrap Windows and install Linux Mint or Ubuntu :sneaky:

 

I have an older net-top Acer PC that had XP, it now runs Ubuntu-Mate with no problems at all.

Thanks for your reply. I did find a program called "windows 7 upgrade advisor" which I ran and after a while it came up saying that

my system can support windows 7.

I also found a microsoft web page where its possible to download windows 7 onto a disc or flash drive, (I presume this is the ISO)

but I have to have a valid product key. I tried it using my xp product key

Hi Bringe - you would need a Win7 product key as you found - your XP one will not work.

Correct it would of had to been an OEM (store bought) version of Windows 7 for it to have worked.

 

Like @RustyKnight has stated you can use Ubuntu or the one that I use is Mint. One of the things about Linux is that you can create the disk and boot form them and use a live version of it. Which will run slower than if it was installed onto the hard drive.

 

This way you can see if everything works and it is what you want.

First is a way to start getting updates again from microsoft to xp. Basically its a way to fool the registry that xp is embedded

and this carries on till 2019. I have done this and it works. Go here.......

Its as a torrent file. I downloaded windows 7 ultimate (32 bit)

So I was wondering if you could advise me as to the best (free) torrent client???

None torrents have a bad habit of adding cracks and hacked software that may include malware.

We recently became aware of a hack that purportedly aims to provide security updates to Windows XP customers. The security updates that could be installed are intended for Windows Embedded and Windows Server 2003 customers and do not fully protect Windows XP customers. Windows XP customers also run a significant risk of functionality issues with their machines if they install these updates, as they are not tested against Windows XP. The best way for Windows XP customers to protect their systems is to upgrade to a more modern operating system, like Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.
