Mokles Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 Hi, I have an external hard drive which I've been using for 8/9 years. It was set to automatically back up and created sets of back ups which I could enter and delete the oldest ones as space filled up. At the beginning of this year I backed up my Android phone to my pc before sending it away for repair - it was a large backup around 40Gb which meant I hadn't space to do anymore. I won't go into why I haven't done anything about the back ups since but a couple of days ago I deleted my phone back up from the pc and the old back ups on the external hard drive and did a fresh back up and couldn't believe it when it filled the hard drive again. Any ideas as to what's going on? I should also say that I also deleted the system image the other day as that seemed to be taking a lot of space, thinking it would make a new one, but it doesn't seem to have made one. My external hard drive is 232Gb and the back up I just did was 171Gb. My PC hard drive is 295GB with 239Gb used. Quote
Mokles Posted October 12, 2018 Author Posted October 12, 2018 Further to my last post, I've been looking around my back up drive and to my horror can't find any of my photos, videos or downloads! I just don't know what's taking up the space and where everything is. I can't find anything dated later than 2010 and that's after doing a backup this week. Thinking about reformatting the external drive and starting afresh. Quote
KenB Posted October 12, 2018 Posted October 12, 2018 Thinking about reformatting the external drive and starting afresh. You mentioned photos etc in your last post. If you format the external drive you will certainly lose this data. I can't find anything dated later than 2010 So eight years worth of backups have disappeared ? Having a drive that is 9 years old for backups is not a good idea. These things don't last forever. :( Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
Mokles Posted October 12, 2018 Author Posted October 12, 2018 So eight years worth of backups have disappeared ? Well some would have been deleted, but the back up I made earlier this week, which was 171Gb, should have had all my stuff on. If you format the external drive you will certainly lose this data. Don't worry the data's still on my pc. Quote
KenB Posted October 13, 2018 Posted October 13, 2018 I still think that a 8 / 9 year old hard drive is too old to use as a back-up drive. :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
