joddle Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 This may sound a bit odd but I have two near identical Dell PCs and want to swap them over - the issue is I want to transplant the HDDs from one machine into the other and visa versa and the reason for doing so is that the processor on one machine is only 2,2 ghz but the other is 3 ghz and I want the faster machine to take on the work being done currently by the slower one. With Balarc Advisor if am able to see the assigned serial numbers for the w10 installation for each machine and so was wondering if I simply swapped the HDDS then when I run up the PCS change the update the licence code on each to that which the machine held previously. The only other option seem to be a reinstall which I did not really want to do as one machine has loads of software installed and I don't want to change that. Or is there another way? Quote
KenB Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 Hi All I can suggest is that you give it a try. Swap one of the HDDs into the faster machine. If the machines are virtulally identical as you say then the Motherboards should be the same. This being the case you should be able to swap the HDDs You can easily find out. :) Suggest that you only try one machine. You may find that some of the drivers need updating - assuming that the machine boots up - which it should. If this works I don't think that the license key will need swapping over. With Win 10 the key is held on the Motherboad in the UEFI firmware. If you are swapping the HDDs then I doubt that you will even be asked to authenticate the "new" hardware. joddle Posted December 27, 2018 Author Posted December 27, 2018 Well thanks - may well be worth a try - the mother-boards do have the same serial type - Will have a go soon and see how it goes Quote
KenB Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 (edited) Let us know how you get on :) Thinking about it - as the key is held on the M-Board it shouldn't make any difference.
