mij Posted March 30, 2019 Posted March 30, 2019 Please redirect this if it is in the incorrect forum page. I was looking for "Networks". When I got my desktop back from the engineers, I could see that the network card was missing as it had an antenna attached to it which was missing. I was informed that a new card had been fitted, this was new and was only as big as your thumb-nail. It fitted in a spare USB socket at the back of the machine. Some of the USB sockets do not work however. I wasn't told why. After a while it was buffering more and more in the middle of of watching a you-tube video. Then it stopped working all together. I found another (new one) online and put it in the socket at the back - it did not work. I tried it in the front usb and it worked fine, for a couple of days. It started doing what the other one did. Today it packed up all together. I tried it in another USB socket but it failed again. I know the router is fine as the W10 laptop connects with no problems. I know that the front USB socket is fine as putting my wireless mouse dongle in there works well right away. I have connected the router to the computer using a cable and as you can see it is fine with that, no buffering in the middle of the video either. It all points to the TP-Link dongle (or what ever it is called) being faulty and perhaps driven that way by this W7 desktop. Running the Windows diagnostic program just tells me there is cable missing etc. Jim. Quote
KenB Posted March 30, 2019 Posted March 30, 2019 Hi Jim, With the USB Wireless Adapter connected [ the "dongle" ] ..... Start button > type in devmgmt.msc ...... hit Enter Click on the > next to ... Network Adapters 1. What is listed with "wifi" or "wireless" in the title? 2. Are there any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs against it ? 3. If not [ you will need an internet connection for this ] ..... Right click on the wireless adapter and select "Update Drivers" Select "Search Automatically" Let me know the answers to the above please. mij Posted March 30, 2019 Author Posted March 30, 2019 Thanks KenB for coming back on this. I have done what you suggested but ended up using the control panel to get to device manager. Having searched for update drivers for Realtek PCIe GbE Family Controller and TP Link Wireless USB Adapter It said that in both cases the driver software is up to date. I assume the first one (Realtek) is the one the engineer supplied as the driver disk that came with the one I bought is marked tp-link. Either way they only worked for a while. Jim. Quote
mij Posted March 30, 2019 Author Posted March 30, 2019 I forgot to mention KenB that there was no yellow or red marks against any hardware/software. Jim. Quote
KenB Posted March 30, 2019 Posted March 30, 2019 Hi Jim Please go back to Device Manager and double click on the TP Link wireless adapter. You should get a box pop up - it should say "This device is working properly" Does it actually say this ? Disconnect the ethernet cable. [ leave the USB Wireless Adapter in place ] Go to Control Panel > Network and sharing centre. There should be an option " Connect to a Network" Click on this. You should see available networks - your own plus neighbours. Do you ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! mij Posted March 30, 2019 Author Posted March 30, 2019 Well well well! I don't beleeeeeve it! In Richard's of "One Foot In The Grave" fame. The TP Link is working now. I don't know for how long mind.... I was answering your post KenB when I realized it was on the dongle and not the cable. Jim (I'd like to say that this one is solved - but I doubt it). Quote
