Hi I have recently bought a new laptop and have moved all my documents over from my old laptop. Having done that I installed Office. How do I moved files from 'documents' onto new Office?

Hi and welcome to ExTS

If you open "Office" > click on "File" [ top left ] then click on "Open" ..... you should see "Documents" there.

You can select the file that you want to open from here.

Is this Microsoft Office or Open Office ?

If you locate the file you wish to open > Right click on it >click on "Properties"

It should indicate "Type of File"

What does it say here ?

Open Office are .odt

MS Word are .doc or .docx

======================

Go back to "Properties" and click on the "Security" tab at the top.

It should look like this ....

Do you have "Full Control" ?- ticks where I have

Thanks for your reply. I am using Microsoft Office 2000 Premium and have installed this on Windows 7, Windows 8.1 (subsequently updated to Windows 10).

Right clicking on a file + properties doesn't state any file.

Looked at Security and where you have KenB etc, I have S-1-5-21-1192***897-29853***42-353***7519-1001

If I click on a file to open it, Word closes.

From what you say - something is corrupt.

I hope that you still have the files on your old hard-drive or memory stick.

Do You ?

Suggest that you install Open Office [ Free ] from here - click here

Download the "Full Installation" and install it.

This is totally free and will open Word files.

Once you have Open Office installed - open it and locate your files [ File > Open > Documents ] as you did before.

Do the files open with Open Office ?

If so - Microsoft Office is corrupt and needs to be removed and re-installed.

If not - You have a problem with your Word Files which we need to investigate further.

From what you say above I suspect it may be the files themselves that have a problem - but it costs nothing to make sure using Open Office.

How did you transfer the Word Files to your new machine?

Hi

All the files are listed under documents in This PC. I have installed Open Office and have the same problem. In Word all the documents are listed but clicking on one to open it results in Word, under Open Office or Microsoft Office, closing.

So it looks like the documents have a problem.

Where are the original documents stored ?

[i am assuming on the hard-drive of the original laptop]

Can you connect a memory stick to the original laptop and transfer the documents [ photos etc ] to it?

If so - plug this into the new laptop

Locate the memory stick in File Explorer

Try to open a file from here.

Unfortunately this didn't work either. Eventually I called in a computer repair man. I don't know what he did but it is now working fine. I uninstalled Office 2000 and am now using Open Office which is sufficient for my use saving me over £100 in buying a new office.

Many thanks for your help and for suggesting Open Office.

You are welcome.

Happy that you can now access your files.

Just one thing with Open Office.

The format that it saves documents in cannot be read by MS Word.

If you want to be able to do this then click on File > Save As ......and select from "Save As Type" ..... MS Word 97

Open Office can open MS Word documents.

I have just checked and MS Office 2000 is not certified compatible with Win10

This could have been your problem.

Enjoy :)
