Skyclad Posted January 14, 2020 Posted January 14, 2020 Hello to my friends at FPCHelp....! Happy to say that nothing severe to report at this time, however found it interesting that last night.......on the way to bed and checking emails, etc...........I found that there was nothing on my monitor but a huge WHITE SCREEN.. It took up the entire monitor, with no icons showing at the bottom, clock or anything else.. The good news is that this morning I unplugged it and it appeared to perform a normal reBoot.. So glad things went down this way, but wondering if you have any ideas what might have caused this.. I've never seen a white screen like this before.. Unfortunately have seen the BSOD though......:) Please let me know any suspicions/ideas you might have on this one..... Thanks in advance!! Quote
KenB Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 Hi, Is your monitor connected to a laptop or PC. ? It could be your graphics card [ if you have one ] Some are actual cards which can be removed and some are chips that are integrated onto the Motherboard. If it is an actual card [ if it happens again ] it could be as simple as taking it out - cleaning the copper contacts - re-insert again. Skyclad Posted January 15, 2020 Author Posted January 15, 2020 I just got a blueWindow alerting me to the fact that as of 1/14, Windows 7 is no longer supported.. Got a feeling that might be the problem, but not for sure.. Yes, I'm still on Windows 7.. Every attempted "update" to W10 has caused my computer all sorts of problems, so have updates now approved via approval only.. Wondering what my options are here now.... Would welcome any ideas.. Thanks in advance...! Quote
KenB Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 Do you mean this screen ? This doesn't mean that you cannot use your computer. Microsoft have done this with Vista and XP too. As from 14th January M$ will no longer provide support or critical updates for your system. This blue screen does not mean that there is anything wrong with your computer. By removing support M$oft are trying to persuade you to move on to Win 10. [ I know that you have tried this ] Some systems are not compatible with Win 10. If you have an up-to-date A-Virus and take precautions when using the net there is no reason why you should not continue to use this machine. Eventually, hardware and software manufacturers will stop providing Win7 compatibility for their products. I suspect that this is a little way away yet. If you are continuing to get a white screen it almost certainly isn't anything to do with the "Support Removal" message. Ultimately might have to deal with all of this down the road....... and we all know the dynamic at play here.. Buy/get new stuff! I'm not quite ready yet, speaking personally.. As far as an "up to date" antiVirus, I'm running very basic stuff (Microsoft Security Essentials) and actually not for sure if it's updated at this point.. I will check on that now.. Will be back in touch if anything further shows up.. One question though..... When I get the blue screen shown above, do I just ignore that and continue on? Please advise.. Thanks for the above info! I do feel better about that little warning now.....:) Quote
KenB Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 When I get the blue screen shown above, do I just ignore that and continue on? Yes - if you intend using your Win 7 for some time yet :) There is a "Don't Remind Me Again" option bottom left. As I understand it - M$ Security Essentials will not get updates after 14th January. You may need to change your AV. Starbuck is the best one to advise on this. I will message him for you. ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted January 16, 2020 ExTS Admin Posted January 16, 2020 Hi Skyclad, I'm running very basic stuff (Microsoft Security Essentials) and actually not for sure if it's updated at this point.. Easy enough to check... If you open MSSE it should tell you on the Home page. As I understand it - M$ Security Essentials will not get updates after 14th January. Sort of right. MSSE is no longer available for download, but if you already have it installed, You will get definition updates until 2023 but software updates will no longer be available. Microsoft Security Essentials reached end of service on January 14, 2020 and is no longer available as a download. Microsoft will continue to release signature updates (including engine) to service systems currently running Microsoft Security Essentials untill 2023. Why is Microsoft Security Essentials no longer available? Windows 7 is no longer supported and availability of new installations of Microsoft Security Essentials has ended. We recommend all customers move to Windows 10 and Windows Defender Antivirus for our best security option. Will Microsoft Security Essentials running on my system continue to run? Yes, we will continue to provide signature updates for Microsoft Security Essentials until 2023. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17150/windows-7-what-is-microsoft-security-essentials You might find this will serve you better than MSSE...... Bitdefender free The only other free AV that I can recommend for Win7 would be .... Kaspersky free If you did decide to go with a different AV..... don't forget that MSSE will need to be uninstalled before installing the new AV. You can download a new AV with MSSE installed and running..... but it'll need to be uninstalled before running the new install. Quote Member of:UNITE

Will continue to monitor to see if anything else goes awry, although still not sure what caused that total whiteScreen situation to manifest.. I will take a look at the links you sent re: a possibly better AV.. As always, thanks for the info and will be in touch on how things go here as things progress...! Quote
