mij Posted January 17, 2020 Posted January 17, 2020 I hate W10! The laptop has been on the shelf since I got my W7 desktop back. On powering up it went into updating. From there it went into a loop which provided no exit. Not even a little red cross in the TRHC. So it had to be powered down. This morning it would not accept my password. Did I say I hate W10! Jim. KenB Posted January 18, 2020 Posted January 18, 2020 Hi Jim Thanks for posting this separately - it keeps the individual problems in the correct place :) It may be advisable to print off the following. So - you can't get past the login where you are asked for your password. If this is correct try the following: Switch on - put in your password and you will get the "Incorrect Password" message. In the bottom right there should be a Power Button. [ bottom right below ] Click on this - then hold SHIFT down and click on Restart You should see this screen - click on "Troubleshoot" Next screen click on "Advanced Options" You should see this screen. Click on Startup Settings At the next screen click on "Restart" You will see these options. Press 4 [ or F4 ] to select "Safe Mode" When prompted enter your correct password to boot up in Safe Mode. If you can get this far you should be able to access your files etc. It is possible from here to create another Admin account. Alternatively it may be possible to do a system restore to a date prior to the problem update. Let me know how you get on. mij Posted January 19, 2020 Author Posted January 19, 2020 Thank you very much for answering this KenB. I wasn't so sure this could be answered :). I did what you said but I was a bit lost in safe mode. I had another go and decided a complete reset of the computer was really the way to go. It seems to be taking its time though - 20% in twenty minutes if that is any indicator. I have made the choice to keep my files but there is little enough on it as I put every thing on flash drive when the desktop came back. Ooh.....it's up to 32%! Let's hope all's well when it's done. mij Posted January 19, 2020 Author Posted January 19, 2020 I've been down for a cuppa and related progress to SWMBO. She interested as W10 will be on her new computer - whatever it is' My laptop is now at 90%! Jim. Quote
mij Posted January 19, 2020 Author Posted January 19, 2020 Nope, it has not worked at all. It took along time to'install W10' - but it has done nothing to alter the outcome. I will try again. Jim. Quote
KenB Posted January 19, 2020 Posted January 19, 2020 Hi Jim I am a bit confused. Did you manage to boot up in Safe Mode ? Did you try "System Restore" ? Are you still stuck on the password screen? mij Posted January 19, 2020 Author Posted January 19, 2020 Thanks KenB. Yes I did get into safe mode but I did not know what/how to do anything from there. I did try restore with keeping my files (I really don't know why as there is nothing there anyway). That took a long time and seem to be winding on..and on...but eventually did complete. It went straight back to the loop. I repeated your instructions but instead of safe mode I went on restore and then opted for a re-installation of W10, and that seems to have gone ok. I could see it would take time so I left it chuntering away all night whilst I slept. I am able to see where they get all the info for 'BIG DATA' now. Especially with the younger generation. Between MS and the others that are in the program they want to know all about you. Jim. Quote
KenB Posted January 19, 2020 Posted January 19, 2020 Do you have access to your Win 10 machine now Jim ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
mij Posted January 19, 2020 Author Posted January 19, 2020 Do you have access to your Win 10 machine now Jim ? Yes thank you. The first thing I did was to check W10 on the laptop. I should have remembered that it asked me for a pin - I'm so used to inputting a password :). Thanks again KenB, it is really good to have everything werky werky again. Jim Quote
