mij Posted April 29, 2020 Posted April 29, 2020 My desk-top that uses W7 with a usb dongle as a network adapter will not open short-cuts to the internet. My W10 laptop seems to be ok though. Can I assume that it needs replacing? Thanks. Keep safe. Jim. Quote
mij Posted April 29, 2020 Author Posted April 29, 2020 Ok, went a bit farther and it went into restore, when it would not open solitaire. After the restore bit it opened solitaire and the dongle network adapter worked :). Hmmmm.........mysteriouser and more mysteriouser........ Jim. Quote

mij Posted May 3, 2020 Author Posted May 3, 2020 Thanks KenB. It seems ok since I ran restore :). Another problem has popped up though, an advert for apple iphone ( have not watched it through to check its origens) insists on opening whenever I go to youtube. It is always there. Nothing I do stops it.......Grrrrrr......Addblock has no effect on it :(. Jim Quote
KenB Posted May 4, 2020 Posted May 4, 2020 Hi Jim, Glad that you were able to sort your WiFi out. Your iPhone problem could be one for Starbuck - I will ask him to take a look :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted May 4, 2020 ExTS Admin Posted May 4, 2020 Hi Jim, Does the advert pop up on the Win7 and the Win10 systems? (or just the Win7 ) What browser are you using? Quote Member of:UNITE
mij Posted May 4, 2020 Author Posted May 4, 2020 I am not sure about W10 as I have only been using W7 for youtube. I'll try youtube on W10 tomorrow. I have been using W10 for reconciling my online banking thingy. Jim. Quote
ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted May 5, 2020 ExTS Admin Posted May 5, 2020 Ok Jim, Don't forget to let me know if you are also using the same browser for the Win7 and Win10 systems. Just want to find out if this is a browser, software or operating system problem. Quote Member of:UNITE
mij Posted May 6, 2020 Author Posted May 6, 2020 (edited) Oh d..... I have forgotten the password for W10 and it's gone into an internal spiral and it will not come out of it. Jim. It has just come out whilst I was contemplating tea for SWMBO. I'll try youtube again.....if I can get in. (A few mins later) Yes, BRAVE.... Edited May 6, 2020 by mij Quote
mij Posted May 6, 2020 Author Posted May 6, 2020 If I go into adblocker global, and choose 'reload ' inW7, it removes the ad. But it's there if I exit youtube and re-enter. Jim. Quote
ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted May 7, 2020 ExTS Admin Posted May 7, 2020 Hi Jim, If your using Adblocker Global then it must be Google Chrome that you're using. To be honest I can't find out much about it (no good or bad reviews) and it certainly doesn't come up in any of the best Adblockers for this year. It's more of an addon than a stand alone program. A lot of Adblockers do have problems with You Tube adds. As you say that If I go into adblocker global, and choose 'reload ' inW7, it removes the ad. But it's there if I exit youtube and re-enter. Then it seems that the problem is related to the adblocker that you are using. You need to use a tried and tested Adblocker. The 2 that I would recommend would be .......... AdBlock True to its name, AdBlock not only stops those annoying pop-up ads, but it also blocks other ads you’ll find on websites. AdBlock is also able to get rid of ads on YouTube and many streaming services, which is something that many ad blockers have trouble with. AdBlock is very customizable . The options include preset filters, blocking individual ads, allowing other ads to show, and whitelisting. By default, Adblock comes with an optional “Acceptable Ads” feature that allows certain safe and non-intrusive ads. This can be turned off in the settings if you want to block all ads. I personally use uBlock Origin. uBlock Origin for Chrome Click on Add to Chrome Once installed, I recommend that you update the blocking definitions. Right click on the uBlock Origin icon (top right of the browser) and select Options. Now click on 3rd Party Filters >> Update Now. uBlock Origin is more than an "ad blocker": it is a wide-spectrum blocker -- which happens to be able to function as a mere "ad blocker". The default behavior of uBlock Origin when newly installed is to block ads, trackers and malware sites. Try one of these instead of Adblocker Global and see if that fixes the problem. Be sure to remove Adblocker Global first. Quote Member of:UNITE
mij Posted May 31, 2020 Author Posted May 31, 2020 It has been some time since when I last was here. I made sure I had no repeat adverts. I have deleted adbocker and put in Ublock origen. Malware bytes is there some where which I thought I may need now that protection of W7 is withdrawn. I have not had any adds come up again so perhaps that has cured it :). A BTW is that I use duckduckgo for a search engine and Brave as a browser. Both of those do not garner your personal details - well they say they don't. Jim Quote
ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted June 1, 2020 ExTS Admin Posted June 1, 2020 Sounds like the problem is solved Jim. You should be fine with Brave and Duckduckgo....... Brave renders websites faster than Google Chrome while protecting your identity online by blocking ads and trackers. It also prevents browser fingerprinting and automatically upgrades website connections to HTTPS for secure encrypted browsing. Unlike Google Chrome, Brave doesn't see or store your browsing data; it stays private on your devices so it won't ever be sold to third parties. DuckDuckGo works in broadly the same way as any other search engine, Google included, by crawling through hundreds of sources to surface the most relevant search results. However unlike Google it doesn't track what you search for, collect IP addresses, or sell users' personal information to advertisers. It also minimises cookie use so people aren't tracked as they move around the web. Quote Member of:UNITE
