RustyKnight Posted July 1, 2020 Posted July 1, 2020 I'm still using Windows 7, mostly because Photoshop won't run on Wine on Linux, and partly because I'm still deciding which new computer to buy. Yesterday I got Windows updates, today when I booted Windows is installing Edge  I'm waiting for it to try to connect then I'll tell my firewall to block it. Can I uninstall Edge or will it keep coming back? Quote [Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Ubuntu MATE, Linux Mint, Chromebook] [several Raspberry Pi running various versions of Raspbian]
ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted July 1, 2020 ExTS Admin Posted July 1, 2020 (edited) Hi RK, Yes it seems that M$ are pushing out the new version of Edge (based on the Chromium browser ) to versions of Win7 and Win8.1 as well as Win10. Once installed, you’ll find a new Microsoft Edge icon pinned to your taskbar, but Edge will not replace Internet Explorer. (On Windows 10, the new Edge replaces legacy Edge.) It also won’t change your default browser, so if you want to switch to Edge—and you do—you’ll need to make that change manually. This update won’t be delivered to PCs that are running Windows Enterprise or are managed by Active Directory or Azure Active Directory, Microsoft notes. Interestingly, once installed, the browser will be automatically updated, despite the OS not seeing any updates since January this year. WindowsArea notes, that, unlike on Windows 10, if you don’t like the new Chromium-based Edge, on Windows 7 you can safely ignore this update. https://mspoweruser.com/microsoft-pushes-out-new-edge-to-windows-7-users/ I would think that it can just be uninstalled in the normal way, although I haven't received this update on my Win7 system as I've turned off Windows updates. As M$ no longer support Win7 I saw no point in still having the updates turned on. Edited July 1, 2020 by Starbuck Quote Member of:UNITE
RustyKnight Posted July 2, 2020 Author Posted July 2, 2020 I found the bit " so if you want to switch to Edge—and you do " very amusing I'll leave it for now as I'm going to get a new PC soon and this one will be left offline, or maybe changed to a Linux PC. ExTS Admin Starbuck Posted July 2, 2020 ExTS Admin Posted July 2, 2020 or maybe changed to a Linux PC. That's what I did with one of my old Win7 systems. Installed Linux Mint .... that seemed fairly close to what I was used to with Windows. Quote Member of:UNITE
