I'm considering purchasing access to a VPN so I can securely connect to a remote site. I've never used a VPN before and I'm unsure of the details.

I have a Windows 10 PC which seems to come with a VPN client installed and all that is necessary seems to be to configure that client to use the purchased VPN service. However I'm not sure if setting this up would mean that all my traffic would use the VPN or only traffic to the remote site.

How do I ensure the VPN is used for only traffic to my remote site and other traffic connects to the internet directly?

I use a free VPN on my firefox browser and when I connect to any site using Firefox when the VPN is on, I will be accessing the site through the location I have connected. I have never tried using VPN as a desktop client.

I haven't paid for VPN, I only use Proton's free VPN services. I have thought about paying for their service, since right now I can only connect to one server and it's still located in my country. That's the downside of using a free one I suppose. I know Youtubers have sponsorships for NordVPN and another one called AtlasVPN but funny enough it merged into Nord back in April. Surfshark is another one I see mention. Brave browser has a built in VPN that I haven't tried yet.
