RustyKnight Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 I have a Lenovo ThinkCentre M720q, the tiny one. Lenovo sell a USB optical drive specifically for this model but I bought a Verbatim one because it was cheaper. I connected it up and it worked fine. But when I started the computer the next day the drive isn't recognized, not listed as an optical drive. Just as as a USB device that isn't recognised. Is there way to make Windows recognise the drive every time I boot or am I going to have to plug it in when I need it? My external hard drive works every time OK. KenB Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 Hi Rusty, Just to clarify - if, after you have booted up, you unplug the drive then plug it in again - does Windows recognise it ? RustyKnight Posted December 4, 2020 Author Posted December 4, 2020 Yes. When I boot up it isn't recognised. I have to unplug it and plug it in again before it appears in Windows. When I first boot, like today, its showing in the Universal Serial Bus controllers section of the Device Manager as "Unknown USB Device (Invalid Configuration Descriptor)". RustyKnight Posted December 5, 2020 Author Posted December 5, 2020 I couldn't figure out how to edit my previous reply. I noticed that when I boot the PC from cold after its been turned off on the wall the DVD drive appears with the error above. However when I unplugged it and replugged it yesterday to get it working then rebooted later in the day, when it had been left on on the wall the drive still showed. KenB Posted December 5, 2020 Posted December 5, 2020 Hi regarding editing a post: I suspect there is a time limit after which it is not possible to edit a post. Have you tried updating the drivers? Plug in the CDROM in the Search Box [ bottom left of screen] type - devmgmt.msc - hit Enter In Device Manager click on "View" in the toolbar at the top Click on "Show Hidden Devices" If the CDROM is showing click the > or + next to it. Then right click on the drive. [ there should only be one drive showing ] You should see this: Click on "Update Driver Software" and then select "Search Automatically" You will need an internet connection. RustyKnight Posted December 5, 2020 Author Posted December 5, 2020 It says the best driver is already installed. I think I'll just have to remember to unplug it and plug it back in when I need it - which is annoying. RustyKnight Posted December 12, 2020 Author Posted December 12, 2020 Just and update, don't know what happened but the drive has worked fine the last two days after being left connected. I did get a Windows update so maybe that had something to do with it. Quote [Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Ubuntu MATE, Linux Mint, Chromebook] [several Raspberry Pi running various versions of Raspbian]
KenB Posted December 12, 2020 Posted December 12, 2020 (edited) Thanks for the update. I agree with your thoughts - the M$ update probably sorted your problem :) Edited December 12, 2020 by KenB 1 Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!
