colinH68 Posted January 8, 2021 Posted January 8, 2021 Hello everyone I am a rapidly aging old fella who has finally decided to get online but i must admit to being a computer beginner. I would like to purchase a Windows 10 Laptop to use for web authoring, downloading ebooks and Skyping. I would like the machine ready to go out of the box with no fiddling around with Internet or wi-fi connections. If Possible? I would also like a tutorial that shows someone like myself how to run and update the operating system. Finally, could anyone recommend suitable security software to keep myself and my machine safe online. Thanks! Quote
KenB Posted January 8, 2021 Posted January 8, 2021 (edited) Hi Colin, It is so much easier if you have an ISP at the moment - do you ? I assume that you have as you have posted here :) Most Windows 10 laptops come with wi-fi installed. It is convenient to have an Ethernet connection too [ this is a socket where you can plug the cable into ] Many laptops don't have this option but if you are having internet connection problems it is useful to be able to try a cable instead of wi-fi There is lots of information on-line re: the Win 10 Operating System. YouTube has lots of videos. Regarding updating the system: Windows 10 updates automatically - unless you turn off this setting. We never recommend buying an Anti-Virus. - there are quite a few good ones available for free. Windows 10 comes with "Defender" already installed - [ a good Anti-Virus ] so no problems here. Sometimes a new laptop comes with another A-V installed - like McAfee - for a trial period. This is a nuisance !! It is relatively easy to remove this and turn "Defender" back on. [ we don't recommend having 2 A-Vs running at the same time. ] I assume that you will have more questions after reading this :) Edited January 9, 2021 by KenB Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! colinH68 Posted January 9, 2021 Author Posted January 9, 2021 Hiya KenB Since my original post i have actually gone and bought an Acer laptop with Windows 10 pre-installed on it. I am online and at the moment i'm running Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS. J just want to make sure that everything is in place before i actually start the setup process on my new Acer laptop. Quote
KenB Posted January 9, 2021 Posted January 9, 2021 (edited) Hi Colin, When you initially switch on Microsoft takes you through a "set-up" sequence. Take a look here - "Two Factor Authentication" is mentioned - This can be ignored if you don't have it set up already. If you want to change any of the options later this is always possible. Just make sure that you select the correct location [ UK ? ] and UK Keyboard. If you select US keyboard some of the keys [ @ for instance ] are incorrect :) Edited January 9, 2021 by KenB Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!
