Install and run the free version (not the Professional version) of Superantispyware Accept any prompts to allow SuperAntiSpyware to install the latest infection definition files. DO NOT allow SuperAntiSpyware to protect your Home Page settings. Double click the yellow "bug" icon in the system tray. Click on "Scan Your Computer". Make sure there is a dot on C:\Fixed Drive. Seth Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 The three main culprits of a slow system are infections (malware), too many needless programs that automatically run when your computer starts, and a failing hard drive. Malware: The log is free of malware, but most malware won't even show up in an HT log. Update and run a complete scan with SAS as Maynard suggested. Do the same with http://www.malwarebytes.org Startup programs: You have very few to begin with, so I wouldn't be concerned about that right now. Hard drive errors: Start>Run>type in chkdsk /r and click ok. Press Y at the black screen that appears and restart the computer to initiate hard drive error checking. Also i found google toolbar and stuff like that cause more problems than they do good. Also Download ATF cleaner : here Uncheck cookies and recycle bin before saying clear selected. When you ran the chkdsk /f, on reboot you should have seen a message that said, "A disk check has been scheduled.." then the chkdsk runs. Did that happen? Let's disable some needless programs from automatically starting when your computer starts. Go to Start>run, type in msconfig and click OK. Put a dot on Selective Startup then click on the Startup tab. Uncheck these: igfxtray.exe hkcmd.exe igfxpers.exe stsystra.exe AOLSoftware.exe (if you don't use this, remove it from Add/Remove programs as it is horribly written software known to cause system degradation) DSAgnt.exe Click Apply>OK and reboot when prompted. I don't recommend AVG in my wildest dreams. My shop disinfects about a dozen computers a week, about half of those are running AVG. However, you removed it and now have no internet protection. Did you install the free home version of sas or the free trial professional? Did the slow down occur suddenly or over a certain length of time? Seth Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 No, don't remove AOL. You need to find out if the issue is hardware or software related. You can do so by pressing CTRL-Alt-DEL at the same time which will open Task Manager. Click on the Processes tab and maximize the screen. Post back with all processes that take up more than 20% of the cpu along with the percentage that the process is consuming. lucasbex Posted March 13, 2008 Author Posted March 13, 2008 Hi, as per requested, The only thing that take sup more than 20% of CPU is System Idle Process and that is saying 92 but is changing and going up to 98. There is nothing taking up more than 100,000 of memory. Thanks Quote
