I have no idea what "fairly old" means, but you should stick with IDE parallel ATA (PATA) drive and probably shouldn't get anything larger than the largest one you're replacing, in case your MOBO won't recognize larger disks. Brand doesn't matter.

Drives from Maxtor, Seagate and Western Digital are all solid choices. You'd probably be good going up to 120GB as far as hard drive size. Beyond that you could run into issues going over 137GB.
