the shed man Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 hi, have you tryed a virus scans in safe mode?? what anti-virus do you have?? Quote
maynardvdm Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 Hi What anti-virus are you running? Just make sure the CPU fan is working and the PC is not getting hot - this is just to make sure its not a heat related problem! Also check the video cards fan. Heat can cause a pc to freeze or slow down a pc. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. AdvancedSetup Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 Hello centry08 and Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help Well it could be so many things, but we will try to assist you in getting it working better again. We need to start out with some basic cleanup just to rule it out as not the cause. Please follow the instructions below and once done come back and let us know if you're still having the same issue or if it seems to have resolved it. Then we can move on from there if we still need to. Your computer could be infected with Malware. Most Antivirus products are not very good at detecting and removing Malware. The programs below are regarded as much better programs to both detect and cleanup yor system if found. Malware is the term used to describe computer infections such as Adware, Spyware, Viruses, and Trojan Horses. You will need to run at least two malware scanners as well as an Antivirus scanner that are listed in the following instructions. Anti-Malware and Anti-Virus scanners perform different tasks. The reason to run multiple scanners is to ensure that no single scanner is missing something. The time it takes will vary depending on your system and your internet connection. Typically the SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes scanners will take between 30 and 90 minutes. The Eset online scan should take between 1 and 3 hours. In most cases, these scans will suffice to clean and disinfect your computer. For best results print the following instructions and bookmark this Web page To keep this guide printer-friendly, use your cursor to highlight the contents below. From your browser select File - Print and in the printer dialog box under "Print range" click the Selection choice to print out these instructions for removal of malware. http://kixhelp.com/wr/images-freepchelp/printer-selection.gifFollow these instructions carefully. Download ATF-Cleaner from Snapfiles.com to remove "junk" files from your computer that may contain malware. You can also download it from Majorgeeks.com When you run ATF-Cleaner, check the items as shown below for Main. For FireFox, be sure to click on the FireFox tab on top and check the items as shown below for FireFox NOTE: If you don't have FireFox or Opera installed then they will be grayed out and can be ignored Then click on "Empty Selected".http://kixhelp.com/wr/images-freepchelp/atf-cleaner01.gif . http://kixhelp.com/wr/images-freepchelp/atf-cleaner02.gifInstall and run the free version (not the Professional version) of SUPERAntiSpyware from www.superantispyware.comAccept any prompts to allow SUPERAntiSpyware to install the latest rules and infection definition files. You do not have to send them your e-mail address, just click next. You can leave the automated check for updates on. You can uncheck "Send a diagnostic report to research center" if you don't want to send the information. DO NOT allow SUPERAntiSpyware to protect your Home Page settings. On the Top Left select the Scan your computer button. Make sure there is a CHECK MARK on all Fixed Drives. Click "Perform a Complete Scan". Click "Next" and reboot the computer when prompted to do so. Install and run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from this link. Malwarebytes - click to directly download the application Accept all defaults for the installer and then click on the Quick Scan and click Next. If any items are found allow it to clean them and then Reboot your computer.Disable your internet security by right clicking on its icon (usually located in the system tray next to the time display) and choosing "Exit", "Disable", or "Shut Down". Run an online scan with Eset from http://www.eset.com/onlinescan You must use Internet Explorer for this online scan. FireFox, Opera, etc will not work for this scan. Accept the terms and click "Start". Once the scanner is ready, check "Remove found threats" AND "Scan unwanted applications". Click "Start" to begin the scan. When completed restart your computerMake sure your internet security is enabled, and then please return to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help and tell us how the computer seems to be operating. At that time, you will receive instructions to assist you in removing malicious programs from your Add/Remove program list if warranted. Quote Need help with your computer problems? centry08 Posted March 21, 2008 Author Posted March 21, 2008 Problem remains Hi 1st off thx for the quick replies The answer to the earlier replies my cpu fan and video card fan are all running and the antivirus im using is McAfee. I have tried the scan in safe mode without success. Ive just finished going through the step by step guide which was very easy to follow so thx but sadly the problem still remains same old freezing time after time :( Is there anything else i could try or is it time for a replacement i know this comp is knocking on abit? RandyL Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 Hi centry; You could try running the Dell diagnostics utility. You can download it if you don't have it. Since you ruled out malware it has to be something else. As AdvanceSetup said it could be many things. Perhaps the hard drive. Hang in there. RandyL Quote We are all members helping other members. AdvancedSetup Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 Did either SUPERAntispyware or Malwarebytes find anything on your system? Please go here and download HijackThis and install it. Run the program and choose scan only. Please copy and paste that log back here. HijackThis Home Page This will help us to analyze what else might be running on your computer that could potentially be causing the problem. Also please run this. Click on START -- RUN -- then type in CHKDSK /F Then press the enter key You should get back something like this: Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) Go ahead and press the Y key and the press the Enter key again and restart your computer. It should run a check disk and repair on the your hard drive when it goes to start back up. Don't stop the scan, let it run. If it does not run let us know that too. RandyL Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 Hi again centry; It would really help AdvancedSetup if you could be specific about the results of your scans. Did they find malware? Did CHKDSK report anything? Also while your waiting for an examination of the HJT log consider running the Dell diagnostics tool if you can. Report back on the results. See you soon. Seth Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 Hi Centry. Your log has items that should be fixed, and I'll get to that shortly. Please do the following first: 1) Remove anything that says "Viewpoint" from add/remove programs. 2) Go to start, run, type in msconfig and click ok. Put a dot on Selective Startup and click on the Startup tab. Scroll through the list and uncheck every item except for the Mcafee entries and the Sun Java Updater. Click Apply, OK, and restart the computer when prompted. You'll know you did it right as a message will appear that you've used the startup utility. Just put a check in "Don't show me this again". How is the computer running now? Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here If Free PC Help has helped you then please consider a donation. Click here
Seth Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 Centry, After following the instructions from my previous post, please run HijackThis and put a check in only the following entries: R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {D73F49B6-B51B-4d32-A3B7-BD04B8342F53} - (no file) O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3F3714A1-89A4-46be-8AF3-D0C9D1FB03F9} - (no file) O2 - BHO: Microsoft MSJava 32 - {43F7497C-7687-4DEA-A057-F21BD81BC896} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msjava32.dll O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file) O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D73F49B1-B51B-4d32-A3B7-BD04B8342F53} - (no file) O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file) O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {3F3714A9-89A4-46be-8AF3-D0C9D1FB03F9} - (no file) O9 - Extra button: Flash Saver - {09EA1F80-F40A-11D1-B792-444553540001} - C:\PROGRA~1\FLASHS~1\save.htm (file missing) Now click on "Fix Checked" and restart the computer when prompted. If you're not using Internet Explorer "toolbars" such as the Yahoo toolbar, you should remove them from Add/Remove programs. After a disinfection, it's a good idea to reinstall Java. You can do so at http://www.java.com The computer should be running much better now. I recommend you update and run a full scan every week with SuperAntiSpyware and read the following on how to prevent a malware infection: http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1285 Please feel free to ask if you need further information. AdvancedSetup Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 For the Java update I would first recommend going into Control Panel - Add/Remove and remove every version of Java found in there. Then restart the computer and go to SUN and install their latest version of Java. I would go with the 6.x version myself. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. maynardvdm Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 Just to clarify you say its working fine in safe mode? Doesnt freeze at all? I would also recommend doing a scan with trend micro housecall its an online scan. I know its a lot of scans but you have to elimenate all malware. You can find the online scan here : HouseCall. Let us know the results. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. maynardvdm Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 As it does not freeze in safe mode i think this could be a driver conflict. Go to device Manager and see it there is any yellow exclamation marks or red X's. Safe mode normally loads minimal drivers. Quote We are all members helping other members.
