Tony D Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 You can start elminating start items that may be causeing this. Go into MSCONFIG, SERVICES tab and select HIDE MS items. Uncheck all the non-MS items. Then look to the STARTUP tab and uncheck everything in there. Restart. If the machine comes up nicely, go back to MSCONFIG and start checking all those items you unchecked one by one, or by small groups and restart each time until you find the culprit. centry08 Posted March 22, 2008 Author Posted March 22, 2008 ok pretty much everything is switched of apart from my internet security and the problem still there sadly Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 Please bear with us centry and we will alleviate all confusion over this issue. Quote
Seth Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 Centry, When the computer is running fine, press CTRL-ALT-DEL at the same time which will open up Task Manager. Click on the Processes tab and maximize the window. Most processes will not consume more than 10% of the cpu (ignore "System Idle Process"), or more than about 150,000K of memory usage. Since the problem is happening about every two minutes, keep an eye on the processes and look for a process that drastically changes the cpu or memory usage when the problem occurs. If that doesn't help, we can look into XP's "Event Viewer" for some clues. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. centry08 Posted March 23, 2008 Author Posted March 23, 2008 ok been watching the view for about 20 mins every time the problem happen there is no drastic change to anything Quote
Seth Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 Right click on "My Computer" then choose Manage, then Event Viewer. Check each heading named "System" and "Applications" and look for any errors or warnings. If you click on either, the details of such will be shown. Do you see any repeating errors and/or warnings? centry08 Posted March 23, 2008 Author Posted March 23, 2008 ok checking event view and under systems the alot of recuring errors from 3 different things the a few saying service control manager but wats more interesting is the other 2 one is CDROM and the other says ATAPI. CDROM comes up with alot of error at the same time as ATAPI. ATAPI also comes up alot on its own with error less then 2 mins apart from each other around the same distance as the freezing Quote
centry08 Posted March 23, 2008 Author Posted March 23, 2008 hmm sorry only just noticed this my cdrom drive does not open or respond when i push the button could that have something to do with the problem Quote
Tony D Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 Disconnect the CD drive and see what happens. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Seth Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 ATAPI and CdRom are generally referring to the same thing. If double click the error, detailed info will be given. Please post that info, although I honestly can't see how ATAPI would cause the problem. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. centry08 Posted March 23, 2008 Author Posted March 23, 2008 im in device manager and trying to disable cdrom drive but everytime i try and disable the cd and dvd drives the programme stops responding Quote
Seth Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 The drive not opening and the inability to disable it are two very good clues. I would do as Kelly suggested and unplug the power to the drive and test out the system. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. centry08 Posted March 23, 2008 Author Posted March 23, 2008 The ATAPI info given in the errors are on some cases The device, \device\ide\ideport1, is not ready for access yet and on some The device, \devce\ide\ideport1, did not respond within the time out peroid on the cdrom The driver detected a controller error on \device\cdrom0 Quote
centry08 Posted March 23, 2008 Author Posted March 23, 2008 sorry i have no idea how to unplug the power to the drive i take it you mean unpluging it from the case its self? Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 Power down centry, take the case side off and just temporarily disconnect the 4 pin white molex connector. Quote
centry08 Posted March 23, 2008 Author Posted March 23, 2008 i just had to turn the comp of and on so far for 10 mins it has not frozen just check the cd rom drive and it opens Quote
centry08 Posted March 23, 2008 Author Posted March 23, 2008 ok the drive are now unpluged no freezing as of yet Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 It sounds like it could be down to some kind of either electrical or IDE cable fault with the the drive, keep us informed centry. Quote
