...will I ever go back?

I haven't completely given up Windows, but I'm not using it right now. I only find a need for it when I feel like playing the popular 3D games, which is actually not that often. I wonder, will I ever be convinced to go back to the new version when it comes out? I mean, I like Ubuntu right now because everything is free (you can't 'steal' it), it doesn't lock you in to particular companies and file formats and it does everything I want it to.

I am curious if the new Windows Vista will have real features or just 'features' Microsoft have convienently borrowed from Apple, the free community or other companies. This isn't so much of a stab at Microsoft, I am genuinely interested as to whether I will ever feel like switching back... :P

lol

me i like ubuntu .. just nowadays everything mostly has as M$ tag on it .. laptops and pcs come presinstalled with it .. its like global pc domination which sucks .. yeah i want an apple i like them for the music productivity, but it sucks hat i have to buy a new unit for it all, but that means i can then use one windows pc for my games and my apple pc for my work and recordings with a pro tools rig :D yey but agree with linux being free and all and having such a wide compatabilty with almost every format or file you could thing of, which is good

as for windows vista .. tried the beta thought it was nice, seen bill gates CES video, im entreegued that will it comes to final release as james says will it have all these features or will it be to heavy to cope, everyone knows that they will cut something out along the way, in the vista beta1, they cut out the sidebar, which i liked, but brought it back i see in the CES version of vista, just waiting till the the next beta and the final version to be released to make final decisions on weather i do stick or not

Ubuntu didn't work for me, no music :( Although whilst using it, it did get me to swap a few things in Windows. I now use OpenOffice, honeslty just for the ace quick loading function and look deeper into 'alternatives' to the bog standard windows c***. However, i'll never leave my warm, green, s***** start button :D x

Red, dude, serious

Last warning about the swearing. Check Mike's sticky about the new rules of the forum

Red, this is your last chance man. This is a family orientated forum and your swearing has no place here. Tone down your language please.

I left windows several months ago in favour of ubuntu (jamey convinced me) and it made me realise just how much I actually hate windows. I was devastated that I couldn't play the sims 2 though so bought a cheap laptop from ebay to run windows for games. I refuse to let windows anywhere near the internet now, because when i was running the sims on my 2.8ghz cpu it was slow as hell because of all the security running in the background, and now with a 1ghz cpu its running smoother than ever. I had never used win2k before and I can't believe just how much it sucks. I wish the rest of the gaming world would take a stand and help get the game makers see that linux ports would be great, but this won't ever happen because windows dominates the market so heavily. And as for wine and cedega, who the hell would want to make a great OS behave like a rubbish one???

I use windows purely because im too lazy to explore all the linux options out there ( and I would never get a mac as I hate apple {dont ask}) I find M$ does ok to hold all the stuff I want, and I mainly use my PC for music or schoolwork, and it does all that spot on.

I had experiemented with red hat for a few days about a year ago, but didn't like it at all really. Maybe about 6 months ago Jamey mentioned Ubuntu...... WOW!

I love it, i hardly boot up windows anymore! It runs Doom3, Quake4 & AA to name but a few quicker than windows and on more than double the quality setting! Quake4 even runs acceptable on Ultra in the earlier les monster intensive levels! And Ultra is so extreme... it comes with a warning about how it's unreccomended. I share my net connection over wireless from it (PCI) meaning i no longer have to switch to windows to play my 360 on LIVE. The bog standard usb adsl modem from bt even runs perfectly, after weeks of annoyances of random disconnecting under windows. I listen to all my music, watch my DvDs and do all my work on it. There's no stupid services running in the background reserving up to 20% of my broadband connection, or allowing remote registry acecss. Please tell me anyone, why that service is enabled automatically on every pc? Who uses it? I use the box as a web testing platform with apache, mysql and php running, ((gave up on windows)) and i thankgod i can use the "patch" program under linux to patch my drupal site, meaning i don't have to pay £2.50 for shell access.

Anything you use under windows... there is a free alternative, always just as good if not better on linux. Whether it's syncing your ipod with your downloaded podcasts from the itunes site, or exporting a document you created in an office suite to a pdf document.

Everyone should give it a try, just get a Live CD! If you're scared, find someone who knows what they're doing to show you the basics.

That's the problem i think, everyone's too used to windows. People need to be guided to and shown the light!!!
