maynardvdm Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 Also do all these scans : Malware is the term used to describe computer infections such as Adware, Spyware, Viruses, and Trojan Horses. You will need to run at least two malware scanners as well as an Antivirus scanner that are listed in the following instructions. Anti-Malware and Anti-Virus scanners perform different tasks. The reason to run multiple scanners is to ensure that no single scanner is missing something. The time it takes will vary depending on your system and your internet connection. Typically the SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes scanners will take between 30 and 90 minutes. The Eset online scan should take between 1 and 3 hours. In most cases, these scans will suffice to clean and disinfect your computer. For best results print the following instructions and bookmark this Web page To keep this guide printer-friendly, use your cursor to highlight the contents below. From your browser select File - Print and in the printer dialog box under "Print range" click the Selection choice to print out these instructions for removal of malware. http://kixhelp.com/wr/images-freepchelp/printer-selection.gif __________________________________________________ ________________________________ Follow these instructions carefully. Download ATF-Cleaner from Snapfiles.com to remove "junk" files from your computer that may contain malware. You can also download it from Majorgeeks.com When you run ATF-Cleaner, check the items as shown below for Main. For FireFox, be sure to click on the FireFox tab on top and check the items as shown below for FireFox NOTE: If you don't have FireFox or Opera installed then they will be grayed out and can be ignored Then click on "Empty Selected".http://kixhelp.com/wr/images-freepchelp/atf-cleaner01.gif . http://kixhelp.com/wr/images-freepchelp/atf-cleaner02.gif __________________________________________________ _______________________________ Install and run the free version (not the Professional version) of SUPERAntiSpyware from www.superantispyware.comAccept any prompts to allow SUPERAntiSpyware to install the latest rules and infection definition files. You do not have to send them your e-mail address, just click next. You can leave the automated check for updates on. You can uncheck "Send a diagnostic report to research center" if you don't want to send the information. DO NOT allow SUPERAntiSpyware to protect your Home Page settings. On the Top Left select the Scan your computer button. Make sure there is a CHECK MARK on all Fixed Drives. Click "Perform a Complete Scan". Click "Next" and reboot the computer when prompted to do so.__________________________________________________ _________________________________________ Install and run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from this link. Malwarebytes - click to directly download the application Accept all defaults for the installer and then click on the Quick Scan and click Next. If any items are found allow it to clean them and then Reboot your computer.Disable your internet security by right clicking on its icon (usually located in the system tray next to the time display) and choosing "Exit", "Disable", or "Shut Down". Run an online scan with Eset from http://www.eset.com/onlinescan You must use Internet Explorer for this online scan. FireFox, Opera, etc will not work for this scan. Accept the terms and click "Start". Once the scanner is ready, check "Remove found threats" AND "Scan unwanted applications". Click "Start" to begin the scan. When completed restart your computerMake sure your internet security is enabled, and then please return to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help and tell us how the computer seems to be operating. At that time, you will receive instructions to assist you in removing malicious programs from your Add/Remove program list if warranted. Quote We are all members helping other members. DSTM Posted March 24, 2008 Author Posted March 24, 2008 (edited) Thanks Maynard. I run SAS free,Malwarebytes, and ATF cleaner regularly. This is the message I was getting, and attempted to run Repair, but got confused. In the heat of the moment I downloaded and run a Reg Fix Free software.I don't intend to use Reg Cleaners in future. I am still in a learning curve, as you may well have gathered,by now.:) Edit. I also run Antivir with full time Guard, and have Spyware blaster also. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315353 Edited March 24, 2008 by DSTM Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.

Seth Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 Hi Doug. The log shows some past malware removed, but nothing that would account for the errors you're getting. If the suggestions in Maynards link don't pan out, then see if you can install the Window's installer. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=889482FC-5F56-4A38-B838-DE776FD4138C&displaylang=en Do you have an XP cd? DSTM Posted March 24, 2008 Author Posted March 24, 2008 Hi Guys,Thanks for all your help. Seth,I have the XP CD Home edition, but this is unknown territory to me,I'm sorry. If I try and install Windows installer, has the present one have to be removed first? I am running a Computer Kapersky online Scan at the moment, but looks ages before completion. Wolfey, this is the Reg fix I used.It scanned and said I had so many problems.I ran the repair twice and immediately I could install Sunbelt Firewall, Google Earth and a couple of other programs. Just wondering,Seth could my registry have been so bad as to cause this installer Problems, and could this Reg Fix software been so good as to have actually repaired the registry? I thought it amazing that it made it possible to install programs again. http://www.glarysoft.com/registry-repair/ Will repost with Kapersky report. Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
Seth Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 "Reg" fixes are almost as much as a scam as the typical "Internet Security Suites". I'll elaborate further, but I'm going out on a service call right now. Bottom line: If you can't install the Window's installer, then a repair install of XP is in order. No worries though mate, as it's easier than you think. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. DSTM Posted March 25, 2008 Author Posted March 25, 2008 Hi Wolfey,I am having difficulty trying to boot off XP CD. Followed these instructions to no avail. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx Read somewhere the "Boot from CD" may be turned off in the Bios. This is out of my league.Dont know how to check? If I could get it to boot off CD,then I am confident now I can do an XP REPAIR.:) Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
Guest Wolfeymole Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 When the pc starts doug look for the message Press Del to enter Setup Del is an example as it could be F2 or F10 etc. Go to the Advanced section and look for Boot order like in the pic below. Change the first boot device to CDROM, Save the changes and exit. Once everything has been repaired change the first boot back to the hard drive. http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z144/Wolfeymoles-Pics/FPCH%20files/Bios-BootPriority.jpg Quote
Seth Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 How are things going Doug? Don't forget to install the Window's critical updates after the repair. Quote Need help with your computer problems? DSTM Posted March 25, 2008 Author Posted March 25, 2008 Hi Seth,Went into the bios and set first boot> CD ROM>F10>marked the Y/N red Box withY (save) Still won't boot up off the Genuine XP CD.At a loss as to why not. When the PC is booting up,at the bottom of the screen it has Boot off CD written with a _ sign flashing, then it still boots into normal mode. CD ROM flashes green for a short time then stops. Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
Seth Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 If you have another cdrom installed on the computer, then try that. You should see a message that says something like "Press any key to boot from the cd". Might be a good idea to go back into the bios and confirm that the cdrom is set to boot first. Also make sure the cd is clean. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here If Free PC Help has helped you then please consider a donation. Click here
Seth Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 Just wondering,Seth could my registry have been so bad as to cause this installer Problems, and could this Reg Fix software been so good as to have actually repaired the registry? I thought it amazing that it made it possible to install programs again. I don't know if that was a coincidence or what, as generally speaking, reg cleaners don't "fix" anything. All they do is look for registry entries that aren't associated with a file and then deletes the registry entry. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help.
