CD ROM is set to boot first. That part seems OK. The XP CD has been kept clean in its folder. No dust or scratches.

Re This reg Cleaner.5mins before I downloaded it, I still couldn't install progs I mentioned.Straight after running it,everything worked fine.As you say my old reg Cleaner never fixed anything period.Just deleted.

Dougie can we forget about the reg cleaner for a minute please and concentrate on the matter in hand.

Can you see the message, Press any key to boot from CD.

Just checked and tried again.Nothing, saying that comes up,anywhere.

Is it possible the new CD-ROM is faulty and cant read?

If I quickly burnt an audio CD,would that rule out anything wrong with the drive?

Do you just have the one cd/dvd drive Doug?
Posted

Yes, we need to know if you have an additional cd drive.

If you have another computer, see if you can get the cd to boot from it (Just cancel the setup if it proceeds).

If not, insert the cd while your computer is up and running. It should auto play and show an XP screen. If it doesn't auto play, see if you can explore the contents of the cd.

I only have one cd-dvd-writer.and only one PC.I will take the XP CD back to the shop tomorrow and see if it's faulty. They can test it while I wait,Iwould think. Does that sound like a worthwhile exercise? If it's OK then I will get back.

Thanks for all your help Guys.

Have you tried what Seth just suggested Doug?
Posted (edited)

Replying to post 24.I just found another CD disc player, which I know works perfect. Will put in tomorrow and see if I can boot up off that. It's early am here.

As I mentioned, I checked, and the bios is set to boot off CD-ROM,first.

I put the XP CD in while on the net and nothing happened.

BINGO.I just put a cd in and nothing happens.I have only used it to burn, not play as we use a Sony Play Station in another room. Thanks so much for staying with this Guys.So if I put the old CD player back in,we should be in business you think? Never dreamed a new player may be faulty. What do you think the next move should be?Try the old Player?

If you mean you can't explore the cd, then yes, something is wrong with the drive.

Download and run this registry fix:

http://www.aumha.org/regfiles.php

Look to the left and you'll see a file called "Restore Missing Cd Drive". Double click it and save it to your desktop. Right click on the file and extract it. Now double click on the EditReg.reg file. You will asked if you want to merge the file into the registry. Choose Yes and restart the computer. Can the drive read cd's now?

If not, use the old drive.

Done that Seth, but still the same, so tomorrow, will swap drives. Will take this one back to be tested. I will report back when I have an update.Thanks.

You're welcome.

Keep in mind that just inserting a cd is not a valid test as the drive may not be set to autorun, or the cd may not be an autorun cd. If that's the case, then you have to try "exploring" the contents.

Update. The CD-DVDRW unit checked out Ok,so I put back in my PC.

I put the Nero Disc in and nothing. Rang the Shop back and all they said,I'm missing Drivers.I asked whats involved? and they said it's too involved for me.

The unit is an LG GS-H55NK.

Any clues would be much appreciated.

You can download the software from that website aswell.

Is it listed when you go into "my computer"?

The last two questions of wolfey:

The jumper is on the back of the unit! Normally it will say M or S or CS. Which one is it on?

Is the unit on its own cable from the motherboard or is there another device on the same cable?

I'll look for more places where you can get the drivers!

I am not getting an errors, nothing. The LG unit is on it's own cable from the motherBoard. The last on the right socket on the motherboard.

Nothing written on the back of the unit where the wires connect.

I can remove the unit again and look,if it's written on the unit somewhere.(Advise if this is necessary, please Maynard)

Not sure in My Computer where to look for the info.

Hi

Click on the highlighted one in this pic and click properties.

Then click on the driver tab and click on "driver details" and post what it says there.

If its on its own cable then it should be set to master. I'll have a look if i can find a picture to show you what i mean.
