Hello Ony

Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help

Are you getting 404 errors?

It may well be that that page/site servers are down.

This error is sometimes caused by malware.

Your computer could be infected with Malware.

Malware is the term used to describe computer infections such as Adware, Spyware, Viruses, and Trojan Horses.

You will need to run at least two malware scanners as well as an Antivirus scanner that are listed in the following instructions.

Anti-Malware and Anti-Virus scanners perform different tasks.

The reason to run multiple scanners is to ensure that no single scanner is missing something.

The time it takes will vary depending on your system and your internet connection.

Typically the SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes scanners will take between 30 and 90 minutes.

The Eset online scan should take between 1 and 3 hours.

In most cases, these scans will suffice to clean and disinfect your computer.

For best results print the following instructions and bookmark this Web page

To keep this guide printer-friendly, use your cursor to highlight the contents below.

From your browser select File - Print and in the printer dialog box under "Print range"

click the Selection choice to print out these instructions for removal of malware.

__________________________________________________ ________________________________

  • Follow these instructions carefully.
  • Download ATF-Cleaner from Snapfiles.com to remove "junk" files from your computer that may contain malware.
  • You can also download it from Majorgeeks.com
  • When you run ATF-Cleaner, check the items as shown below for Main.
  • For FireFox, be sure to click on the FireFox tab on top and check the items as shown below for FireFox
  • NOTE: If you don't have FireFox or Opera installed then they will be grayed out and can be ignored
  • Then click on "Empty Selected".

  • Install and run the free version (not the Professional version) of SUPERAntiSpyware from www.superantispyware.com
    • Accept any prompts to allow SUPERAntiSpyware to install the latest rules and infection definition files.
    • You do not have to send them your e-mail address, just click next.
    • You can leave the automated check for updates on.
    • You can uncheck "Send a diagnostic report to research center" if you don't want to send the information.
    • DO NOT allow SUPERAntiSpyware to protect your Home Page settings.
    • On the Top Left select the Scan your computer button.
    • Make sure there is a CHECK MARK on all Fixed Drives.
    • Click "Perform a Complete Scan". Click "Next" and reboot the computer when prompted to do so.

    __________________________________________________ _________________________________________

  • Disable your internet security by right clicking on its icon (usually located in the system tray next to the time display) and choosing "Exit", "Disable", or "Shut Down".
  • Run an online scan with Eset from http://www.eset.com/onlinescan
  • You must use Internet Explorer for this online scan. FireFox, Opera, etc will not work for this scan.
  • Accept the terms and click "Start".
  • Once the scanner is ready, check "Remove found threats" AND "Scan unwanted applications".
  • Click "Start" to begin the scan.
  • When completed restart your computer

Make sure your internet security is enabled, and then please return to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help and tell us how the computer seems to be operating.

At that time, you will receive instructions to assist you in removing malicious programs from your Add/Remove program list if warranted.

Hi ONY;

Just a quick question. Have you updated Windows after reinstalling XP?

Yes windows xp was updated with service pk2 after being reinstalled. I have done all the scans and downloads that you suggested. The ANTISPYWARE found problems with adware an removed them. I then did the MALWARE scan and it too found problems with adware and removed them. But i still have the problem....also, i keep getting asked to connect to the internet even though its showing im online. Any suggestions would be much appreciated, thanks.

It would appear that you have some process (perhaps from a security suite like Norton or McAfee) that might need tweaking or updating.

In your DEVICE MANAGER do you see anything that has a YELLOW or RED icon on it?

For now before we have you run other tools look in your STARTUP folder and see what's in there and let us know.

What Security Suite if any are you running?

Do you have Nero,My DVD, ROXIO or some other CD/Writing software installed?

Error Message "can't Find Server"

I have a yellow question mark in device manager called 'other devices'.....when i open it, it says 'ROOT\LEGACY_HPFECP15\0000. I have no programmes running in 'start up'. After my computer was reformatted it had 'windows firewall and security center' installed also but i disabled it as i was using 'spyware terminater' as i was before it was reformatted and i had no problems then. I also have Roxio cd writing on here but it came with the disc that Dell supplied with the computer and was also on here before reformatting.

Hi ONY;

That 'other device' appears to refer to a HP printer. Do you have a HP printer installed? Older models of HP printers have been noted to generate the Generic host process error message.

Hi ONY;

Please go here and download HijackThis and install it.

Run the program and choose scan only. Please copy and paste that log back here.

This will help us to analyze what else might be running on your computer that could potentially be causing the problem.

Sorry to bother but can you disable WORD WRAPPING in NOTEPAD

and then copy/paste to notepad and then back here on the board in a format that is more readable.

Typically each entry should have it's own line - then a carriage return, line feed.

Thanks.

Please remove all of your Easy CD Creator 5 application and also any Roxio software (I'm assuming since this is a rebuild that you have the installation files or CD)

Run the system and see if it's still having problems.

If the system is still having issues then review this Microsoft article and follow it step by step. Then run the Windows update and do a CUSTOM analyze.

Then install any Windows CRITICAL UPDATES and reboot and see if you're still having the issue.

Error messages when you start a Windows XP-based computer and then try to download Windows Updates

Even if this article does not fix it, it won't hurt it either but we will have ruled out one known issue.

You can run CMD from the Start Menu and that will put you in a DOS box where you can type your command without it ending.

Yes that keeps the black screen up but theres no info on it. It says: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. c:\Documents and Settings\User> and thats all that shows up.

I typed in: net stop wuauserv and it said Automatic Updates Service is turned off. Not sure how i will correct and rename the list that was given on that site you suggested. As nothing else comes up to change.

Copy this and paste it to NOTEPAD and then do a File SaveAs

On the SaveAs TYPE select the down button and choose All Files

Then name it: FIXUPDATE.BAT and save it where you can find it.

  • Double click on FIXUPDATE.BAT to run it.
  • Reboot your computer.
  • You may get an error from the FILE PROTECTION utility on Windows XP but just ignore it and reboot the computer.
  • Then once the computer has restarted launch Internet Explorer and do a Windows Update

@ECHO OFF
net stop wuauserv

Here is an image of what the the Windows update may look like

Once you have run this batch file and restarted the computer and have run the Windows Update. Choose CUSTOM and then get all the CRITICAL updates. Then restart your computer again and go back and do another Windows update and look for any more CRITICAL updates and get those if needed.

Then come back and let us know how things are going.
