maynardvdm Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 This error is sometimes caused by malware. Your computer could be infected with Malware. Malware is the term used to describe computer infections such as Adware, Spyware, Viruses, and Trojan Horses. You will need to run at least two malware scanners as well as an Antivirus scanner that are listed in the following instructions. Anti-Malware and Anti-Virus scanners perform different tasks. The reason to run multiple scanners is to ensure that no single scanner is missing something. The time it takes will vary depending on your system and your internet connection. Typically the SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes scanners will take between 30 and 90 minutes. The Eset online scan should take between 1 and 3 hours. In most cases, these scans will suffice to clean and disinfect your computer. Yes windows xp was updated with service pk2 after being reinstalled. I have done all the scans and downloads that you suggested. The ANTISPYWARE found problems with adware an removed them. I then did the MALWARE scan and it too found problems with adware and removed them. But i still have the problem....also, i keep getting asked to connect to the internet even though its showing im online. Any suggestions would be much appreciated, thanks. AdvancedSetup Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 It would appear that you have some process (perhaps from a security suite like Norton or McAfee) that might need tweaking or updating. In your DEVICE MANAGER do you see anything that has a YELLOW or RED icon on it? For now before we have you run other tools look in your STARTUP folder and see what's in there and let us know. What Security Suite if any are you running? Do you have Nero,My DVD, ROXIO or some other CD/Writing software installed? Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. ONY Posted March 26, 2008 Author Posted March 26, 2008 Error Message "can't Find Server" I have a yellow question mark in device manager called 'other devices'.....when i open it, it says 'ROOT\LEGACY_HPFECP15\0000. I have no programmes running in 'start up'. After my computer was reformatted it had 'windows firewall and security center' installed also but i disabled it as i was using 'spyware terminater' as i was before it was reformatted and i had no problems then. I also have Roxio cd writing on here but it came with the disc that Dell supplied with the computer and was also on here before reformatting. Quote Welcome to Free PC Help. RandyL Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 Hi ONY; That 'other device' appears to refer to a HP printer. Do you have a HP printer installed? Older models of HP printers have been noted to generate the Generic host process error message. RandyL Quote We are all members helping other members. AdvancedSetup Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 Please remove all of your Easy CD Creator 5 application and also any Roxio software (I'm assuming since this is a rebuild that you have the installation files or CD) Run the system and see if it's still having problems. If the system is still having issues then review this Microsoft article and follow it step by step. Then run the Windows update and do a CUSTOM analyze. Then install any Windows CRITICAL UPDATES and reboot and see if you're still having the issue. Error messages when you start a Windows XP-based computer and then try to download Windows Updates Even if this article does not fix it, it won't hurt it either but we will have ruled out one known issue. AdvancedSetup Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 You can run CMD from the Start Menu and that will put you in a DOS box where you can type your command without it ending.
