Guest Jeff Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 I'm using XP MCE on a Toshiba notebook PC. I keep having a trouble of letters being skipped when I type rapidly. This is most apparent when I type a double letter (letter might come out leter), but it sometimes happens in other cases if I type real fast. I've gone to the settings for the keyboard and tried different settings unsuccessfully. At present the keyboard properties are set as follows for "Speed": Repeat delay: set to closest to Short Repeat rate: set to closest to Fast. Have I got the settings wrong? Is there somewhere else I should look? Thanks. Jeff
Guest RajKohli Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 RE: skipping double letters You should also check if the Filter Key is on. 1. Click Start - Control Panel 2. Open Accessiblity Options 3. Uncheck Filter key Hope this help, let us know! Guest RajKohli Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 Re: skipping double letters Does it skip letters in every application or just MS Word and Internet Explorer? Had you recenlty installed any application after which it is causing the problem? Uninstalling it may solve the problem? If you have recently installed IE7 then it could also be cause of problem. Is there somewhere else I should look? A few thoughts: - An interrupt, or two, is dedicated to seeing kb action, and there's a buffer for keeping up to 10-256, some amount of keystrokes stored. I suspect some operations are using so much process time that the keystrokes aren't being stored and recorded. - Look in Task Manager to see what process is using so much CPU time. It could be malware. - As a test, in System Properties, Advanced tab, Performance Settings button, click the "Adjust for best performance" radio button. See if this helps. You may not like these features being off, but it's just a test. Under the Advanced tab, change to "Background Services" under Processor Scheduling. -- Joe =o)

Hey, it could even be a keystroke-logger that's sending the letters to headquarters!
Guest Jeff Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 Re: skipping double letters Thanks Elmo. I have no malware. I keep a very clean machine and check regularly for viruses, Trojans and malware. >> - Look in Task Manager to see what process is using so much CPU time. >> It could be malware. "System Idle Process" uses the most at 98 CPU. Everything else runs 1-4 CPU. >> - An interrupt, or two, is dedicated to seeing kb action, and there's >> a buffer for keeping up to 10-256, some amount of keystrokes stored. >> I suspect some operations are using so much process time that the >> keystrokes aren't being stored and recorded. Can that buffer be increased? Problem is mainly when I use Word. Thanks. Guest Bob I Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 Re: skipping double letters I'd suspect you may be too fast for the keyboard itself. Try a USB attached one and see if that cures the issue. You may have to "release" the key a little longer on the laptop keyboard. I would try an external keyboard. Also try a hardware group for better suggestions. -- Joe =o)
Guest GarrSL Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 Re: skipping double letters I have noticed that double letters are removed when I call SendInput to simulate keystrokes. When simulating keystrokes from the thread that runs the active window, I have found that a call to the dot NET method SendKeys.Flush() after every keystroke eliminates the double letter removal problem. When done in other threads it has no effect. This makes me think that there is something wrong in the event processing of the window itself. This probably does no real good in solving the problem, but it may help in eliminating a variety of things that are not the problem. -- GarrSL
