Guest R_ACE1 Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 Has anyone ever has this problem......... I'm using the same Windows XP CD that I used to reformat my HDD's. But today while the CD was copying the files into the HDD there were many files that could not be copied into my HDD. Could the CD be going bad??? Or could it be something else? Thank you

Yes and yes. ;-) 1. Bad XP CD; or 2. Bad CD drive; or 3. Bad hard drive; or 4. Bad RAM; or.... etc. Malke -- Elephant Boy Computers http://www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic!" Or could it be something else? CDs do get to a point where they are unreadable - they do wear like anything else. CD drives also can go bad. Cables can be loosely connected. Hard disk drives can go bad. Memory can effect this as well. Guest R_ACE1 Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 Re: Is Win XP disk now messed up??? Check this one out. I connected the HDD into another computer. I also used the same CD (that wasn't booting up). The drive formated and XP was sucessfully copied into the HDD (sucsess!). NOW after hooking up the HDD back into the original computer XP is not loading??????? So I thought ok the CD rom is going bad, I swapped cd's and tried loading XP again. Same thing happened, files not copying.... Any ideas????
Guest davy Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 Re: Is Win XP disk now messed up??? The laser lens might want a clean on the CD.... or the laser diode maybe losing it's emission. The light has to travel through the optics, reflected back from the disc back through the optics again and then on to the sensor... any dust build up on the lens will cause attenuation of the beam, since this 'has' to pass through the lens twice you get double loss so to speak. Or the disc might want a clean with a soft cloth.... while your at it why not create a copy - just in case...! Davy
Guest R_ACE1 Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 Re: Is Win XP disk now messed up??? Making a copy sounds like a great idea. I thought it was a dirty lense so I cleaned it, still nothing. Some how it still works on my other computer than the original. Others have told me that it could be a bad video card or someother peripheral. Could that be a problem?? If so what would be the best way to troubleshoot it. I will let you know what I try and if I fixed it.
Guest R_ACE1 Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 Re: Is Win XP disk now messed up??? To add stressful fuel to this fire I remeoved any peripheral one by one, same problems. I then removed all peripherals except for the video card, still nothing. I also removed the 512 that was there and installed another stick of 512 (same specs as the old one of course), still nothing. I'm going to try to swap video cards, if that dosen't work then maybe the BIOS battery. I'm out of ideas after that... tell you what this computer is very mischievous. Sometimes it would go as far as copying XP files then stop partway or cannot copy some files (never the same files) or I would get the blue screen of death... I now got a error message before the XP cd could boot up. The error says: "The system has run out of memory at line 4846 in file, setup cannot continue" (and there is a stick of 512 in there). Any ideas will always be appreciated. Thank you, Ray
