Guest Stan Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 98 SE; system purchased in '99' Started "Old Faithful" tonight and it won't even run the POST. Least not all of it. I get to a screen that detects the mouse, keyboard and cd-rom and proper amt. of RAM. Or is that all the POST? That's as far as it goes. It just stays on that screen. Does not respond to system setup key; startup floppy never starts. Any thoughts? Thanks
Guest Stan Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 Re: Dead MB? I disconnected all HDD's, both power and data cables except primary master. Reseated power and data cables to primary master, reseated RAM, reseated PCI card, reseated video card, pulled sound card and dialup modem card, pulled the power cables from cd-rom and floppy drive, pulled system battery from MB for 5 mins. With an error about floppy drive and 2 beeps (Pheonix) it booted to Windows. I will now procede to reinstall each device, one at a time, restarting after each. Guest Lil' Dave Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 Re: Dead MB? Bad plan. See no reason to reinstall anything unless you change card locations n the motherboard. Then, again, windows might adjust to that without reinstalling anything. Would investigate the 2 problems hinted as bios summary message about floppy and the 2 beeps hinted as bios boot associated. Then, worry about windows if its really problem. Messing with windows now might incorporate stuff from the bios that's problematic. Guest Stan Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 Re: Dead MB? If I have the CD/DVD-ROM power cable disconnected and the cable running from the CD/DVD-ROM to the sound card disconnected, everything works except, of course, the CD/DVD-ROM. If I have both or either of those cables connected Windows never starts. I have an old CD-ROM laying around someplace; I'll try that next.(Tomorrow) Must it also have a cable to the soundcard? Guest glee Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 Re: Dead MB? Try replacing the flat data (ribbon) cable from the mobo to the CD drive (the one you have disconnected right now). The cable may be bad. I suspect that it is the CD drive itself, though. The wire to the sound card, if it is a small wire, is to enable sound from the CD drive through the sound card....so you can listen to audio CDs directly, through the computer using a media player. It should unplug from the CD drive so it can be plugged into a replacement drive. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Stan" <bhrichREMOVE@aol.com> wrote in message news:eWXu4ypwHHA.4588@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... > If I have the CD/DVD-ROM power cable disconnected and the cable running from the > CD/DVD-ROM to the sound card disconnected, everything works except, of course, the > CD/DVD-ROM. Guest Gary S. Terhune Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 Re: Dead MB? Windows isn't involved here. The boot doesn't even get close to loading Windows. The question is which hardware component is bad. Yes, if it's discovered that it is a card that's causing the problem, then trying a different slot is the next step... But Windows isn't involved in the slightest. -- Gary S. Guest Gary S. Terhune Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 Re: Dead MB? I've had situations where the small wire from the CD drive to the sound card caused problems. Try it with just that cable disconnected. If everything then works, consider leaving it detached. It isn't needed. If that doesn't fix things, then the CD drive itself is probably bad. -- Gary S. Guest Stan Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 Re: Dead MB? The continuing saga......... Three days ago, the eighth, I shut the system down with a cd in the drive. Next day, with cd still in it wouldn't boot to windows and that's when I started this thread. The new findings....... If I have a cd in the drive and boot, it freezes before Win starts. If I take the cd out and reboot it boots just fine. With the system running the cd rom door responds to the "open door button"; opens and closes. If I put a cd in and close the door then the cd rom quits working all together, even the door won't open and close. Tried a different data cable, no joy. Tried with sound card cable on and off, no joy. Tried a different cd rom but it's old and I think it's bad too. When I push the open door button on this one the door opens but closes right away then it's dead. (Think I have a third one around somewhere........) BTW, I did try a different (never been used) slot on the MOBO, no joy.
