Hi

I have had my laptop for near on 3 years and it has always run relatively slow but the last few weeks it keeps locking up and the only way to get anything to happen is to pull the plug as it doesnt have a battery.

It also takes forever to load anything, for example if I click IE or just a normal program it takes about half hour to load up, albeit when im on the net or in a program it runs fast.

I have spysweeper, adaware home edition and avast home edition but they dont find anything. Im using Windows XP-Home Edition, any ideas?

Thanks

Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help Dee.

Let's have a look at what's running on the laptop.

Please go here and download the HijackThis installer:

TrendSecure | Download TrendMicro™ HijackThis™

Run the program and click on "Scan Only". When the log is created, please copy and paste it back into this thread.

Silver,

In general, it's a myth that defragmenting the hard drive will increase system speed. It helped a bit on older drives, but now defragmenting the hard drives main purpose is to cause less wear and tear on the drive and make data recovery easier.

Hi Kelly

No the internet is running great, the disk capcity is 33.25GB and there is 25.89GB free pace on it.

I have done the disk cleanup also.

Go to Start>Run, type in chkdsk /f (space between the K and the F), and press ok. At the black screen, type Y and restart the computer to start hard drive error checking.

Once complete, go back to to to the Run command and type in msconfig. Put a dot on Selective Startup and click on the startup tab. Scroll through that list and uncheck everything except Avast entries and Jusched. Click Apply, then OK and restart the computer. Put a check on "Don't show me this again" when the message appears that you have used the system startup utility.

How is the system running now?

Right click on "My Computer" and choose Properties. What does it show for the cpu speed and memory?

Depending on that, 5 minutes may not be too bad, especially with Avast having to load.

Once the startup is complete, does it still take long to open other programs?

Hi Seth

Where do I find the cpu speed and memory on the properties of my computer? Not sure what you mean

All other programs are loading up really fast again now, and when it goes to screen save it actually comes back again instead of me having to pull the plug lol

Dee

Ok, that's good news.

The cpu speed and memory are found on the General tab in the Properties of "My Computer".

Other suggestions:

1) Upgrade to IE 7.

2) Go back to msconfig and enable the SpySweeper entries. But, if you're going to pay for a Antispyware program, you might as well pay for something that is much better and much cheaper ($40.00 US for a lifetime subscription) SUPERAntiSpyware.com - AntiAdware, AntiSpyware, AntiMalware!

3) As a follow up, here are two final steps:

* Follow these instructions carefully.

* Download ATF-Cleaner from Snapfiles.com to remove "junk" files from your computer that may contain malware.

* You can also download it from Majorgeeks.com

* When you run ATF-Cleaner, check the items as shown below for Main.

* For FireFox, be sure to click on the FireFox tab on top and check the items as shown below for FireFox

* NOTE: If you don't have FireFox or Opera installed then they will be grayed out and can be ignored

* Then click on "Empty Selected".

.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* Install and run the free version (not the Professional version) of SUPERAntiSpyware from SUPERAntiSpyware.com - AntiAdware, AntiSpyware, AntiMalware!

o Accept any prompts to allow SUPERAntiSpyware to install the latest rules and infection definition files.

o You do not have to send them your e-mail address, just click next.

o You can leave the automated check for updates on.

o You can uncheck "Send a diagnostic report to research center" if you don't want to send the information.

o DO NOT allow SUPERAntiSpyware to protect your Home Page settings.

o On the Top Left select the Scan your computer button.

o Make sure there is a CHECK MARK on all Fixed Drives.

o Click "Perform a Complete Scan". Click "Next" and reboot the computer when prompted to do so.

Is this what you mean?

processor 1.30GHz

1.29Ghz, 224MB of RAM

Thanks for the links and all of your help I really appreciate it

You're most welcome.

Given the low cpu (processor) and memory (Ram) specs, as well as the internet security programs that need to load, your startup time is acceptable.

If you go with SuperAntiSpyware instead of SpySweeper, then please let me know as I'll have some suggestions for you. Oh, and you'll need to remove SS first.

Hi Dee,

Here is a bit more complete entry in case you were missing where to get the downloads or how to run them.

On another note - if possible you may want to think about getting more memory for your PC which would improve the overall speed. 512MB should be a minimum

  • Follow these instructions carefully.
  • Download ATF-Cleaner from Snapfiles.com to remove "junk" files from your computer that may contain malware.
  • You can also download it from Majorgeeks.com
  • When you run ATF-Cleaner, check the items as shown below for Main.
  • For FireFox, be sure to click on the FireFox tab on top and check the items as shown below for FireFox
  • NOTE: If you don't have FireFox or Opera installed then they will be grayed out and can be ignored
  • Then click on "Empty Selected".

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Install and run the free version (not the Professional version) of SUPERAntiSpyware from SUPERAntiSpyware.com - AntiAdware, AntiSpyware, AntiMalware!
    • Accept any prompts to allow SUPERAntiSpyware to install the latest rules and infection definition files.
    • You do not have to send them your e-mail address, just click next.
