Getting rid of user accounts

Can I make it so no one has to sign in as a user on Windows XP? I would like

the computer to just start up without having to put in a password or

designate a user. If I do delete a user account, will I lose all the files

under that account? Thank you for any insights or assistance.

Re: Getting rid of user accounts

Hello,

To login to an account automatically,

Start > Run > control userpasswords2 > OK > UNCHECK Users must enter a .. >

OK > enter username, password, confirm password > OK

If you delete a user account, you have the option of not deleting the files.

It is better to backup the important files in that account and delete the

user account completely.

In addition to your other response, you are aware of the security

implications of what you want to do?

I assume you mean that anyone logging onto the computer will be able to see

all files. That is not a problem. It is only myself and my husband and we

only use one account right now. I just want to eliminate the requirement to

sign in as that one person. Thanks - cf

What I mean is that ANYONE who has physical access - including "guests" in

your home and "guests on the internet - hackers" could see all your emails,

files, pictures etc etc. If you are happy with that, then fine.

Hello,

Even if your account is password protected you are still vulnerable to

hacking attacks without adequate protection like Anti-Virus, Firewalls,

Anti-Spyware and Updates.

The only thing is that anyone with physical access to your computer will be

able to access it by just switching your PC on.

Setting passwords provides hardly any protection at all. The passwords are

relatively easy to remove.

Not really. Bootable CD images are freely available that removes passwords.
