No Bluetooth Icon in Control Panel

There is no Bluetooth Icon in the Control Panel for me to add my device.

I am running XP Pro Version 2002 Service Pack 2. I am trying to synchronize

with my Motorola KRZR K1 cell phone. I am on a wireless network at my home

business.

How do I get this to work and how do I get the icon?

Re: No Bluetooth Icon in Control Panel

I bought and use a Kensington Bluetooth USB dongle for my cingular razor

phone. It comes with software to set it up. Doing some research on

accessories for your cell phone might produce a

better solution for you.

You could try Right-click My Computer>Manage>Services and

Applications>Double click Services>Bluetooth Support Services>Start the

Service.

Right-click Bluetooth Support Services again>Properties>In the general

tab, select automatic for Startup Type

Re: No Bluetooth Icon in Control Panel

Do you have a USB connection for Bluetooth. If so, does windows detect

new hardware?

Re: No Bluetooth Icon in Control Panel

I also don't have "Bluetooth support services" listing in Services, and no

"Bluetooth Devices" icon in control panels. So, I'm assuming something needs

to be re-installed? If you Start>Run type: bthprops.cpi it is supposed to

bring up the control panel folder. On mine it does not. I search for the file

and it is on the computer in two places but does not bring up anything. How

can it be restored??

Re: No Bluetooth Icon in Control Panel

I had this problem some time ago, so I'm trying to remember how it was

fixed.

When you plug in USB connection, does Windows detect new hardware?

Does device appear in Right-click My computer>Open?

Also, when I finally got my bluetooth icon back, it initially appeared

as the last icon in Control Panel, not alphabetically. So, when

checking, make sure that Control Panel window is maximised.

The Start>Run command should be bthprops.CPL not CPI

Re: No Bluetooth Icon in Control Panel

Have you got a Bluetooth USB connection device (dongle).

Although XP has drivers to support Bluetooth, I believe you need one of

these, unless you have some kind of internal PCI card that supports

Bluetooth.

Otherwise, I don't think you can just "enable it". Similarly, you can

enable wireless connection but you need a wireless card or dongle to use

it.

Re: No Bluetooth Icon in Control Panel

Yes, I have a Bluetooth USB dongle. The hardware (device) side of things

seem to be fine, according to device manager, but I have no Bluetooth

Support services or Bluetooth Icon, I can see bthprops.cpl but can't "run"

it, and I can't complete a connection between a Bluetooth enabled phone and

my PC running the Windows XP SP2 with all current updates. I have tried this

with drivers supplied by Blue Soleil, came with the dongle, and I have tried

it with native Microsoft driver capability--no luck. It is a mystery

Re: No Bluetooth Icon in Control Panel

OK, let's try this.

Generally speaking, most people would advise you to use the driver

supplied with your Bluetooth dongle - normally comes on CD. As with

wireless utilities, this is not always the case.

It may be that there is a conflict with Blue Sun/Soleil and Windows

drivers.

Try going into Control Panel>Add/Remove and removing Blue Soleil (you

can always use CD to re-install).

Reboot.

Then plug in your Blue Soleil USB dongle,

Does Windows inform you that "New hardware device detected"?.

Followed by: "Windows will now install drivers for this device"?

If so, allow Windows to do this.

When I first tried this , I thought it had failed, I couldn't see

Bluetooth icon in control panel but when I maximised the window, it was

the last icon in the list. Only when Control Panel window was closed and

re-opened did it appear in alphabetical order

See if this works and we'll take it from there.

Tried your suggestion. Here is what happened. After I restarted my PC and

conected the Bluetooth usb dongle I got the Microsoft Found New Hardware

Wizard. It gives you two options--install automatically or install from a

list or specific location. (Also, along either path you choose it always

gives you an option to use a CD, if you have one from a vendor). I went down

both paths in every conceivable way with appropriate restarts, and software

uninstalls, and device uninstalls, etc. and always got the same result--the

Blue Soleil drivers were installed although I had removed the software

through the Add/Remove capability--apparently some files were locked and

non-removable. I was never presented with the chance to use any other

drivers as if Microsoft's bluetooth capability didn't exist. I can see all

sorts of Microsoft Bluetooth files under \windows\System32 but they never

seem to come into play. For example, I can see bthprops.cpl but can't "run"

it, I can see the bthserv file which I believe has the Bluetooth Support

services but it won't execute.

On the hardware side my PC recognizes the usb Bluetooth device and says it

is installed and working. I believe the problem is I don't have any

Bluetooth Support service available in the services list and thus can't

connect external Bluetooth enable devices, i.e., my phone, with my PC.

I am mystified--no Microsoft Bluetooth capability that seems to be working

or available, no Bluetooth icon in the Control Panel, No Bluetooth Support

service in the services list, running absolutely the most up to date version

of Windows XP SP2, and can't get anywhere. I appear to be cursed!!

Re: No Bluetooth Icon in Control Panel

Download Windows Install Cleanup Utility:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Download link can be found under More Information.

Can you see a reference to Blue Soleil? If so, highlight it and click

remove.

If Blue Soleil is not listed, WICU is worth keeping.

Download TweakUI (power Toys for Windows XP):

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

When you click Control Panel can you see bthprops.cpl? If so is it

ticked?

If you can see it, tick it and Apply.

Check to see if bluetooth support is now in Services.

Re: No Bluetooth Icon in Control Panel

Have just checked my files in Windows Explorer>Windows>System32>Show

Hidden Files. Scroll down

I have four files relating to bluetooth. Three Application extensions:

bthci.dll, bthserv.dll and btpanui.dll.

Plus 1 Control Panel extension: bthprops.

If you DO see these, try right clicking the bthprops file and selecting

Open With Control Panel.

If you do not see any of these files, it may be worth visiting:

http://search.microsoft.com/results.aspx?siteID=1&q=bthprops&mkt=&mkt=en-US

Re: No Bluetooth Icon in Control Panel

Hey, just noticed earlier in this thread that you tried to Run

bthprops.cpi. No wonder it didn't work. You have to Start>Run

bthprops.cpl, that's (cpL) not (i).

Re: No Bluetooth Icon in Control Panel

Hi Adrian

You will only see the Bluetooth icon in the Control Panel if you are

using the Microsoft Bluetooth stack. If you're using the Blue Soleil

stack, it won't appear.

It's also not (usually) as simple as choosing one or the other; it

depends on the chipset in your dongle and whether it can work with the

MS stack or not. There is a hack you can try (make a backup of the file

first!) that work for some, but if it doesn't, you will have to use the

Blue Soleil software that came with your dongle.

http://joncellini.com/blog/archives/2004/10/07/further-adventures-with-bluetooth/

I'd recommend following the procedure below before trying it, though.

You definitely should have the Bluetooth Support Service running in the

Services list if everything's properly installed, so I suspect it isn't.

This might be because although you uninstalled Blue Soleil, there is a

"ghost" of the old driver hanging around, which is why XP keeps re-

installing it for you. To check this:

Open a command window (Start | Run, type "cmd" without the quotes, click

OK).

At the prompt type:

set devmgr_ show_nonpresent_devices=1 <enter>

then type:

devmgmt.msc <enter> (Device Manager opens up)

[*Important!* Don't close the Command window yet -- otherwise the option

you just set will be lost.]

In Device Manager go to the View Menu and click on Show Hidden Devices.

Now have a look and see what you have under Bluetooth. Also check under

Network Adapters for any Bluetooth PAN entries. If you see, as well

as your current normal entries, any grayed-out "ghost" duplicate entries

in either place, delete the ghost and OK your way out. Close the command

window.

Now you can uninstall again and try re-installing the Blue Soleil

software (or if trying the hack above, uninstall, then plug in the

dongle and see if XP will install it using built-in Bluetooth).

Please do let us know how it goes. Good luck!

You don't RUN bthprops.cpl from Win Explorer (\windows\System32 ), but

Re: No Bluetooth Icon in Control Panel

SUCCESS!! I now have a Bluetooth Icon in my Control Panel, Bluetooth Support

Service in my services list, and I'm using the Microsoft Bluetooth stack in

support of my USB dongle. I tried everything you guys suggested, except the

"hack" which I'm saving for a "rainy" day, and the results were perfect.

Thanks to you both, Smirnoff and Nightowl, for your patience and advice. I

truly appreciate it.

I did one other thing that I'll pass along for your edification although I

still believe I was successful due to your suggestions. I consulted the

Microsoft Knowledge Base and found and article, 911894, concerning an error

message that appears when you install a USB transceiver for a Microsoft

keyboard or optical mouse to configure Bluetooth. It didn't seem directly

related to my problem until I read the symptoms of the problem which included

no Bluetooth icon and no Bluetooth Support Service. The cause of this issue

was a missing registry entry for Bluetooth Support Service. The resolution

involved adding the missing registry entry. I followed the instructions to do

this modification as my entry was missing. If this had any impact of the

successful outcome it was only because of your previous help, particularly

with the "ghosting" problem.

Thanks again for all your help. I learned quite a bit that will no doubt be

helpful in the future.

Regards-----Adrian
