IE odd problem on XP

Hi peeps, hope you can sort this one out for me :P

 

Recently reformatted my comp and everything is good. got ie 7 and still, its all good. this morning I turn my comp on, go on the internet, only to find it says "cannot display web page"... you know the typical one you get when your not usually connected to the net.

...yes I'm connected lol :P

Utorrent works fine, itunes store works fine etc. unreal tournament game works on the net.

It's just the internet explorer. Somehow I found out that if I refresh it enough times it eventually comes up, but this is anywhere from 2 to 20 times. It's not a weak signal, checked that. Best part is, I downloaded firefox just to see if it was ie7 (even after I reset the explorer settings) and it's the same on firefox (I clicked "Do NOT copy internet explorer settings and history") etc.

 

I'm stumped guys, please help :(

Well that is a clue that you very easily could have Malware on your box just by using such an application.

 

I'm not saying that IS the issue, but have seen so many times that these programs do infect a system that one has to consider that being the cause.

 

Try running this FIRST then if you're still having the issue we can look for other things.

 

 

You will need to run at least two malware scanners as well as an Antivirus scanner that are listed in the following instructions.

Anti-Malware and Anti-Virus scanners perform different tasks.

The reason to run multiple scanners is to ensure that no single scanner is missing something.

 

The time it takes will vary depending on your system and your internet connection.

Typically the SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes scanners will take between 30 and 90 minutes.

The Eset online scan should take between 1 and 3 hours.

In most cases, these scans will suffice to clean and disinfect your computer.

From your browser select File - Print and in the printer dialog box under "Print range"

• Accept all defaults for the installer and then click on the Quick Scan and click Next.
  
• If any items are found allow it to clean them and then Reboot your computer.

• Disable your internet security by right clicking on its icon (usually located in the system tray next to the time display) and choosing "Exit", "Disable", or "Shut Down".
  
• Run an online scan with Eset from Free Virus Scan: Use ESET's Online Antivirus Scanner
  
• You must use Internet Explorer for this online scan. FireFox, Opera, etc will not work for this scan.
  
• Accept the terms and click "Start".
  
• Once the scanner is ready, check "Remove found threats" AND "Scan unwanted applications".
  
• Click "Start" to begin the scan.
  
• When completed restart your computer

Make sure your internet security is enabled, and then please return to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help and tell us how the computer seems to be operating.

At that time, you will receive instructions to assist you in removing malicious programs from your Add/Remove program list if warranted.

If no malware is found, it may be a DNS problem. Have you checked with your ISP to see if others are having problems and if so, what DNS do they recommend?

 

I checked you profile, but you didn't list a location. Are you in the UK? Can someone suggest a DNS in the UK?
