Guest Angel Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 Hi, I just got done working on line and after I got done playing Solitaire, I just went past the Icons in bottom left side and all my Icons disappeared!! I then went to the start button and all icons are gone! What is causing this? It was a surprise, never expected it. Angel
Guest glee Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 Re: disappearing Icons! Did you do a virus scan with Avast, or at least open Avast on-demand scanner and open the dialog box for selecting folders to scan? This is a "known" bug in Avast on Win98 and AFAIK also on WinME. See the recent thread by PCR on the issue, in this group....Subject: "Avast! loses program icons!", posted June 29. You will also find some info on this in the Avast support forums: http://forum.avast.com/ Search the forums and you will find some posts like this: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=23914.0 although the Avast evangelists on the forums have not provided a lot of help with this issue. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Angel" <angel@noway.com> wrote in message news:OSskx$NxHHA.5068@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... > Hi, > I just got done working on line and after I got done playing Solitaire, I > just went past the Icons in bottom left side and all my Icons disappeared!! > I then went to the start button and all icons are gone! > What is causing this? Guest Angel Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 Re: disappearing Icons! Hi Glee, Yes, I did the checked Archives and through scan. After it came up with the Archives could not be scanned, I did the folder thing and closed it. But I did that the other day and did not expect any after effects to remain. That is what I am questioning. I also did the through Scan when I first installed Avast! but not the folder thing. Will I have any more problems with it? Or is this a one or two time problem? I did not know that this was a bug to worry about. I only have the Web Shield and Standard Shield and no skins. I never had skins running. Any solution? Guest glee Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 Re: disappearing Icons! Avast has not addressed the issue that I am aware of. It will happen every time you open the "Open Folder" dialog box, even if you cancel without choosing anything. You have to reboot to restore the icons, and it deletes the shelliconcache file, so upon reboot the desktop icons will redraw, and then the file is rebuilt. It appeared in version 4.7 of Avast, AFAIK. It happens in both Win98 and WinME, according to forum reports. It appears to erase the icon cache from memory as well as deleting the shelliconcache file physically. The Avast "evangelists" on their support forum keep chalking it up to "Win9x poor management of resources", which sounds a bunch of malarkey. Disabling skins has no effect....I see no solution except to not use the option to scan specific folders, or to complain to Avast Support repeatedly and in large numbers, till they heed the fact that the problem exists, and correct it if possible. Guest Angel Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 Re: disappearing Icons! Hi Glee, I was wondering if the thing will keep doing it even if I do not try to scan the files in Avast! It happened even the time that I did not try to scan the files. After I had shut down for the night and restarted the computer the next day. Guest glee Posted July 14, 2007 Posted July 14, 2007 Re: disappearing Icons! I'm not clear on what you are asking. If you open the Avast on-demand virus scanner and select Folders in the Areas To Scan section, the dialog opens to 'Select the areas'. Whether or not you select an area, or cancel, when you close Avast, the icons will disappear from the Start Menu, the Quick Launch bar, and so forth as mentioned. Is this when you are seeing the problem, or are you seeing it at some other time? Are you stating that you shut down or restarted the computer three times, and without opening Avast afterwards, the issue with icons still occurred? Or something else? -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Angel" <angel@noway.com> wrote in message news:ujmbjIYxHHA.4476@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... > Hi Glee, > I was wondering if the thing will keep doing it even if I do not try to > scan the files in Avast! Guest Angel Posted July 14, 2007 Posted July 14, 2007 Re: disappearing Icons! Yes Glee, I get the same thing even if I do not do a through scan and I only used the standard one without Archives scan. I have not tried to do the folder thing since the problem first started. I still get the problem even when I am done playing solitaire which is furnished with the Windows 98se. What I want to know is will I continue having problem with the Avast! even if I only use the Standard Scan? I usually do the scan before I shut down the computer. Will I have to stop this habit and not scan? It also happened before I do the scan. Right after I played the solitaire game. I moved the mouse toward the bottom near the Quick Launch bar the icons disappeared. It won't come back, UNTIL you use the Folder Selection button (or any Browse button in avast!) again. (It's possible to scan selected folders or drives by R-Clkng them in Explorer, instead of using the main avast! interface. And you really don't need to use avast!'s Browse buttons much.) Are you using a shortcut to reboot? Better reboot this way, if you want to regenerate icons... "START button, Shut Down, Reboot" Here's the full story as glee & cquirke tell it, but usually you don't need to do all this... (1) "Control Panel, Display, Appearance tab". (2) Select "Icon" in the Item dropdown menu. (3) Change the Icon size by one pixel, & Apply. (4) Change it back to original size, & Apply. (5) "START button, Shut Down, Restart". (Do not use a shortcut to Restart.) Now, you should have a new ShellIconCache with one reboot & never needing to delete it or to enter Safe Mode. If you don't have your icons back after that, it must be something else at fault. | "glee" <glee29@spamindspring.com> wrote in message | news:eeQGGFbxHHA.4840@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... |> I'm not clear on what you are asking. Guest Angel Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Re: disappearing Icons! No Glee, It does not resolve when I shut down and cold start the computer. Yes, the Icons disappear in both the Start and the Quick launch bar. I do not know if the Icons disappear in Windows Explorer. I have not checked that. Guest Angel Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Re: disappearing Icons! Hi Glee, The Icons come back when I restart either by cold start or the short cut restart, only to disappear again later when pass over the Quick Launch bar. The Icons did not disappear yesterday so maybe, just maybe that problem has resolved itself. Wishful thinking but computers do strange things. From now on I will be careful when using the Avast! Virus Scan until that *Bug* problem is resolved. I will keep watching the posts about it. I have seen many OSs since 1992 when I first started working with them. After I retired I took Classes at KSU on them. Thanks everyone for your input on this problem that PCR and I are having issues about. Guest PCR Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Re: disappearing Icons! Angel wrote: | Yes PCR, I did shut down completely each time. I still matters HOW you shut down. Did you use the START menu or one of those various contrived shortcuts? It's best to use the menu. Shortcuts don't allow the ShellIconCache to get rebuilt. Some of the time the computer | was shut down overnight. I still had the disappearing icons. That is | why I posted the question. Well, I see glee has an article for you. You may actually be experiencing a different "disappearing icon" phenomenon than the one glee & I think. Actually, no icon should disappear, EXCEPT the little ones to the left of folder & program names seen... in Explorer (left & right panes), in file selection dialog boxes, & in the START menu past the first layer. (The 1st layer is fine!) Other icons will change to the "flying windows" icon-- notably in the Control Panel. BUT I haven't seen icons disappear from the Desktop or even change. Also, they don't disappear (or even change) from the Tray, QuickLaunch bar, or the Taskbar. And I've just tried it again to see! There was something else that did cause icons to disappear from the Taskbar. It was the "Friend Greeting" thing... http://vil.mcafee.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=99760 ......Quote........ Use the ADD/REMOVE Programs Control Panel in Windows to remove the Friend Greetings application, as well as the WinSrv Reg application. This will uninstall this program. ......EOQ........... Guest glee Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 Re: disappearing Icons! OK. It may still be the unresolved issue with Avast, but your symptoms appear to be a little different. Guest Angel Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 Re: disappearing Icons! PCR, You mentioned the friend greeting thing. I never opened a friend greeting thing at all. I do not open those things. So it cannot be that. I think that the trying to do the scan folders did it. Right now I have no problem with the disappearing icons. I did the repeated complete shut downs and changing folder size fixed it.
