Guest bill Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 This is probably pretty stupid but I have googled and found nothing to help. I have a fairly simple stock control/ database program which crashed on me due to a power failure. To re-install I must first uninstall. Problem is via add/remove programs the process just hangs. I cannot uninstall it. Just removing the folder and deleting as many reg entries as I could find did not help. How can I uninstall this damned thing ?? Using win98se. TIA Bill
Guest Bill in Co. Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 Re: Cannot uninstall program!! But why can't you try reinstalling it again over itself, w/o first uninstalling it (even though that might be preferable)? Then, if you want, you might be able to uninstall it, and reinstall it a bit more cleanly (if that's your concern). bill wrote: > This is probably pretty stupid but I have googled and found nothing to help. > I have a fairly simple stock control/ database program which crashed on me > due to a power failure. > To re-install I must first uninstall. Why? Not necessarily. > Problem is via add/remove programs the process just hangs. > I cannot uninstall it. > Just removing the folder and deleting as many reg entries as I could find > did not help. > How can I uninstall this damned thing ?? > > Using win98se. > > TIA > > Bill
Guest Jeff Richards Posted July 14, 2007 Posted July 14, 2007 Re: Cannot uninstall program!! The problem might be with the install routine that the application uses. It could be the Microsoft installer, it might be a third party installer (such as Installshield) or it might be a custom installer created for that application. If you can identify the installer being used you can search for issues related to that particular installer. For instance: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/231978 http://windowsxp.mvps.org/MSICLEAN.htm (Note that the XP site might give you some ideas, but check carefully whether the utilities provided work with W98). If it's a custom one, then only the application manufacturer would be able to help with installation issues. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "bill" <bill@ibulls.com> wrote in message news:Oo0SSkXxHHA.4076@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... > This is probably pretty stupid but I have googled and found nothing to > help. > I have a fairly simple stock control/ database program which crashed on me > due to a power failure. > To re-install I must first uninstall. > Problem is via add/remove programs the process just hangs. > I cannot uninstall it. > Just removing the folder and deleting as many reg entries as I could find > did not help. > How can I uninstall this damned thing ?? > > Using win98se. > > TIA > > Bill >
Guest bill Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Re: Cannot uninstall program!! Thanx for the input gents. The supplier said it would not install cleanly unless the old version was deleted via add/remove which refused to co-operate. I deleted the prog folder then scoured the registry deleting what I could find with reg crawler, but I guess there was some stuff stored with a different name to the program name. This allowed me to re-install ( not sure if the program would have worked and didn't try it ). Immediately removed it with add/remove progs which now co-operated. Then re-installed and everything worked fine. Thought you might like to know.
