No Start/Search Results

Recommended Posts

All of a sudden the Start/Search has stopped finding anything. It hasn't

been all that long since I've used it. Now it always says “Search is

complete. There are no results to display.” I usually use the “All or part

of a file name”, i.e. *.dll or “microsoft”, etc. and it has always found

*something*, even in the cache. I haven’t used “A word or phrase in the file”

that I recall. If I did it found something. I did try that though and it

found nothing.

No matter what I search for-- a folder name, part of a file name, a program

name, with or without a wildcard, a file extension (i.e., .exe, or *.exe),

there are no results. I have a Dell and it doesn’t even find “Dell”. It

doesn’t even find “Microsoft”. It says “searching....” in the window and the

green bar is scrolling, the animated character is searching, but there are

never any results. However, it does find what is in the Recycle Bin, *only*.

It used to show the names of files/folders or wherever it was looking,

scrolling in the left panel, but it doesn’t show that any more either.

Sometimes after I click “Search” it *immediately* says no results. It

doesn’t even take time to search.

I am using Search Companion, I have it set to Look in Local Hard Drives

(C:) (and tried Local Disc C:), files and folders, search behavior is

Advanced, Search system files, Search hidden files and Search subfolders, and

not ticked for Case sensitive. I have tried ticking “With Indexing”, and

“Without Indexing”. I have tried changing these settings every which way and

inside out. :)) Still no search results.

I do not get any error messages. I have WindowsXP Home SP2, IE6. It is not

networked. I am administrator and the only user.

Can someone possibly shed some light on this?

Thanx

Judy

Re: No Start/Search Results

Hi Kelly,

Thank you for your reply. Using your link: Windows/inf, right-click

srchasst.inf file, click Install, Copy files from C:\WINDOWS\INF\i386

(default location) does not work, it says I need the WindowsXP Home Edition

SP2 CD . I do not have a retail Windows CD. I only have the Dell

"Reinstallation CD" with SP 1 on it. Will this work with the Reinstallation

CD? And I have the separate SP2 CD.

(I don't get any errors using the search)

Thanks,

Judy

Oh, forgot to mention. My computer BSOD 2 weeks after I put SP2 on with the

CD. My computer guy did a "repair" install (9/06). I don't know if this

will make any difference.

Re: No Start/Search Results

Sorry Kelly. I also didn’t tell you, in the “Files Needed” window that comes

up after I right-click Install on srchasst.inf file, it says that “The file

‘msgr3en.dll’ on Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 CD is needed."

Re: No Start/Search Results

Hi Kelly,

thank you so much for replying to this. I go to look for something and

can't, I'm ready to tear my hair out. lol.

I think so. Under “Action” the Start is grayed out.

Catalog: System

Location: C:/System Volume Information

Size (Mb): 142

Total Docs: 114256

Docs to Index: 0

Deferred for Indexing: 0

Word Lists: 0

Saved Indexes: 1

Status: Indexing Paused (User Active) Started

I don't know about setting anything for "unknown extensions" though.

In Start/Search, in the search companion, the option says “Without Indexing

Service” and if I click it, it says indexing service active. And I have

search hidden files, search system folder, and search subfolders ticked.

Um, I have Copernic desktop search downloaded but not running unless I use

it, which has been hardly ever. I should uninstall it. Could that be

affecting it.

Thanks heeps,

Judy

Re: No Start/Search Results

Hi Kelly:

Sorry it took so long to get back to you.

Copernic does not have a forum. I did email them though. They said Copernic

desk top search does not interfere with Windows Search.

Copy file from /i386 did not work.

My srchasst.inf file is dated 7/16/03. None of the other problems in your

link seemed to fit my predicament.

I have a folder C:/WINDOWS/SRCHASST (dated 1/3/02, that is the day I got my

computer) that has the msgr3en.dll file in it dated 9/27/06 which is when the

repair install was done.

I googled this and found http://www.jsifaq.com/SF/Tips/Tip.aspx?id-6222,

using the second option re: use the GUI to configure. No it wasn’t ticked.

But I ticked the unknown extensions and Search still does not return *any*

results.

I hope this info helps. This seems to be getting really complicated. I

really appreciate your help.

Thank you.

Judy
