Problems Burning DVD +RW

Can anyone help, I am loosing the will to live.......

 

I have an LG DVD+Rewritable CD ROM drive that has worked fine for reading CD's and and CD ROM's for ages.

 

I have just purchased some DVD +RW disks to back up some digital photos, however when I try and copy and paste the images across I get an error to say that there was a problem with the coping process.

 

Do the disks need formatting before I can write to them?

 

When I go into the properties screen when the disk is in the file system is described as 'RAW'.

 

Any advice??

RW disks do have to be formatted prior to use.

 

When it comes to archival, I prefer to use R, not RW disks. RW disks get formatted by your computer and may be difficult to read on other computers. That's my experience with CD's. I assume DVD's are the same.

 

To go one step further, backing up to another hard drive is more reliable than CD or DVD media.

Are you using Vista by any chance Surface?

Can I just ask why you want to use a DVD running at 4.7GB to burn some pics to Surface?

It seems like a waste to me mate to be honest.

I see where you are coming from, but it just frustrates me that I can't get it to work.

Have you tried right clicking on the drive and choose Format?

Hi all;

This might be a DVD read/CD read and write combo drive.

 

If so you can only write to CD not DVD.

A very good point Randy

In other words the DVD side of the drive can only read DVD's and not burn them whereas the CD side of the drive can burn as well as read a CD.

I have tried right clicking on the drive when the DVD is in, but unfortunately format is not an option.

 

Also, the drive says DVD+ rewritable on the front, so I assume that this is an option.

 

Any other ideas????

What exactly does it say on the drive Surface?

 

For example on my drive it says DVD R/RW

The slogan for the CD indicates Compact Disk Rewriteable.

 

A similar picture to this except mine is not multi.

Just found a thread on another site which states that the drive must be set to MDMA2 to successfully record to DVD +/-R media.

 

Any idea what this means?

Never heard of that. Must just be a Linux thing.

 

Try this:

 

Insert the DVD-RW into the computer's DVD drive. You will see a dialog box pop up. You need to click on the option saying ‘Burn files to disc’. You will get a dialog box for ‘Burn a disc’, in which you need to enter a name for the new DVD.

 

You then have to click on ‘Show formatting options’, proceeding to click on one of the formatting options.

 

If that doesn't help, right click on My Computer from the Start Menu and choose Manage. Now choose Disk Management, right click on the DVD drive in the lower window and choose "Format".

 

Other than that, I would forget about DVD RW's and go with what Kelly and Wolfey have already suggested.
