Well - I can think of a few reasons - the easiest one to back up being that there is sometimes the requirement of some setup on the remote computer that the users may not be able to accomplish without an excessive amount of hand-holding. Of course - I have been known to use the UltraVNC One-Click solution to get the first connection and then use that to setup everything else for Remote Desktop/Remote Assistance without ever going to the client's home.
