Ones that I know work well with Win98 are Kerio v.2.1.5: http://download.oldversion.com/keriopf215.exe and Tiny Personal Firewall 2.1.5a: http://download.oldversion.com/tpfirewall2015a.exe You might also try one of the older versions of Zone Alarm: http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=zalarm As I'm not a ZA fan, I'm not sure which version works best with Win98, but it has to be earlier than v.6.5. ZoneAlarm stopped support of Windows 98/98SE/Me with the introduction of version 6.5 "Note about pre-6.5 products: Pre-6.5 products will continue to run on the Windows 98/98SE/Me operating system. However, there are a few new and advanced protection features in ZoneAlarm products that will not run due to technical limitations of this operating system." > Firefox Works fine here and at work with Win98SE. The issue to contend with is that on older systems (those that often are still running Win98/98SE), the processor may be slower and the amount of installed memory (RAM) may be low for Firefox's needs. What this will cause mostly is somewhat slow loading of Firefox when you first open it.....like, click the Firefox shortcut, hand-roll a cigarette, and it will be open when you're done. ;-) There are a couple of ways around that though. One is, if you plan to use Firefox extensively, to load it when Windows starts and leave it open for your Windows session. I find that Firefox still creates some issues with CPU usage if left open and unused for long periods, only in Win9x, so I prefer to use the Firefox Preloader on older systems, which is the second method I refer to: https://sourceforge.net/projects/ffpreloader/ You don't need it if your system is speedy enough.....what processor and how much RAM is installed? > Firefox Extensions You should not have any more trouble with them that folks may have in another operating system. Read the details of each one before installijg to be sure it does not state a particular OS as a system requirement, and always downlaod extensions from a trusted source, usually the offical Mozilla Add-ons pages. > Set Your Virtual Memory On A 2nd Hard Drive I suggest setting the swap file partition as the first partition on the second drive. Go here and scroll down to the heading "Dedicated Swap File Partition" for a good read on that: http://aumha.org/a/parts.htm Also have a read here: http://aumha.org/win4/a/memmgmt.htm > CCleaner (Crap Cleaner) It is supposed to work in Win98. I do *not* recommend using all of its features. Read carefully before you enable something, lest you remove something you wanted to keep. I do NOT recommend using the Registry cleaner module of this or any other utility. > Power Defragmenter GUI > > Contig (Works along with the Power Defragmenter GUI) I don't use them, but this page suggests they are not for use in Win9x: http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=722 "System Requirements: WinNT / Win2K / WinXP" Perhaps someone who uses them can verify or refute. > Desktop Cleaner (a zip file that puts a folder on your desktop that calls > itself "Tidy" and puts all unnessary icons and files in there that don't > belong on the desktop) I know nothing about this app, but can't imagine why anyone would need, or want, it. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm

Yes you can install AVAST! in 98, but there are issues. Two discussions are or were recently held in here related to icon issues and other anomilies... myself I installed it and had several issues, so I went back to AVG. Guest glee Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 Re: PROGRAM HELP FOR WINDOWS 98! As MEB mentioned, there are some "cosmetic" issues with the release of Avast 4.7, that causes the icons to disappear on the Start Menu and in Windows Explorer and folder windows, after selecting folders to scan in the Avast A-V window. The system must be rebooted to get the icons back. See the recent thread by PCR on the issue, in this group....Subject: "Avast! loses program icons!", posted June 29. You will also find some info on this in the Avast support forums: http://forum.avast.com/ Search the forums and you will find some posts like this: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=23914.0 although the Avast evangelists on the forums have not provided a lot of help with this issue. I have used Avast on Win98SE for several years, and think it one of the best free anti-virus apps. This new display issue does not seem to hurt anything, but it is disconcerting and annoying, at best. Other free anti-virus apps that work in Win98 include Grisoft's AVG: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0 ActiveVirus Shield (powered by Kaspersky) may work also...I have not tried it: http://www.activevirusshield.com -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Brusso" <Brusso@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:808E69BA-B464-42CB-872D-F395FA57A47D@microsoft.com... > Can you also please tell me if Avast Anti-Virus will work in Windows 98 as > well and if there will be any problems running it at all? > -- > Thank you and have a great day!!! > > BRUSSO!!! > > > "Brusso" wrote: > >> I was just wondering if you can please tell me if these programs are OK to >> install and run on Windows 98 and will they work or cause any problems at >> all? >> >> Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool >> >> What type of Firewall for Windows 98 (preferably a free one that won't add >> spyware, adware, or other crap without you knowing it to your system)? >> >> Firefox >> >> Firefox Extensions >> >> Set Your Virtual Memory On A 2nd Hard Drive >> >> CCleaner (Crap Cleaner) >> >> Power Defragmenter GUI >> >> Contig (Works along with the Power Defragmenter GUI) >> >> Desktop Cleaner (a zip file that puts a folder on your desktop that calls >> itself "Tidy" and puts all unnessary icons and files in there that don't >> belong on the desktop) >> >> -- >> Thank you and have a great day!!! >> >> BRUSSO!!!
Guest PCR Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 Re: PROGRAM HELP FOR WINDOWS 98! Brusso wrote: | Can you also please tell me if Avast Anti-Virus will work in Windows | 98 as well and if there will be any problems running it at all? Avast! Home Edition v.4.7 has a lot of good to it & some bad. Here is the bad I've discovered so far... (a) Certain icons can get lost (the little ones left of folder & file names) or changed to the "flying windows" icon (like in the Control Panel) after avast! displays icons in certain screens (Folder Selection & Browse screens) & the interface is then closed. (You could leave the interface open & not mess the icons, looks like.) Everything still works in/out of avast!, but certain screens will look WEIRD. Or, you could avoid those avast! screens that display a lot of icons. A reboot is the only thing that restores the icons once lost. It is the ShellIconCache that is getting mussed. (b) Avast!'s scan reports are lacking certain information. They don't say what folders/files were selected to be scanned or the scan settings... .......Quote a report............ * * avast! Report * This file is generated automatically * * Task 'Simple user interface' used * Started on Sunday, June 24, 2007 01:22:13 PM * VPS: 000751-4, 06/23/2007 * Infected files: 0 Total files: 10660 Total folders: 787 Total size: 1.0 GB .......EOQ............................ In that one, I think I scanned C:\, Thorough, & not its archives. © When choosing to include archives, I believe avast! does open & scan all .zip files, but it doesn't get into every extractable .exe file-- even some that WinZip CAN get into, like the MS *user8.exe's. On the plus side, avast! does get into some .exe's that WinZip will not. Also, it gets into .chm files-- & WinZip will not! (d) The menu items that show scan results are apparently only available directly after doing a scan. After that, you have to open the reports in Explorer to read them. Other than that, I think avast! is doing well. In the last 2 or 3 months, I would notice periodically, that my icons were changing on my desktop. The common-denominator was .TXT files. When this change happens, it doesnt matter where I go on the computer, because every single .TXT icon will be the one currently assigned. (by whatever is causing it.) The Icon chosen to represent the .txt files was always one of 3.... 1)firefox browser icon 2)a 3D graphics piece of software icon that I have. 3)(damn, I have forgotton 3rd, but either way, something common to my computer. ) As many have already pointed out, yes, a simple reboot fixes all. The text files show just fine. I imagine anyone else who has had their icons changed will still find the file or .exe or whatever will still function. (I never had a problem using the icon-shortcut no matter what icon was being offered by the offending problem-causer.) Anyhow, my two cents just like anyone else.... hope this helps in someone here figuring out what is going on. (btw, i've learned to live with it.)(hopefully someone from avast will drop in here and find that it really has become an issue and that their reputation may be at stake.) Oh, I just realised something...... I have had Avast for over 2 years, so why is it showing these problems up on my computer now?? Maybe it has something to do with one of the updates in the last 3 months, just a thought? The only other explanation is that it has nothing to do with avast.

I think paper's problem is a different one. I see nothing special happening to .txt icons. Also, nothing happens to Desktop, QuickLauch, Taskbar, OR Tray icons, that I have seen. It is NO CURE to increase the size of the ShellIconCache to 8192, both glee & I have discovered. It is NO CURE to play with avast! settings, either-- such as disabling skins. Those who think so probably did not shut the main avast! interface after triggering the problem (by for instance clicking the Folder Selection button)-- the icons won't disappear until they do! Finally, it is NO CURE to exclude "C:\Windows\ShellIconCache" from Avast!'s virus checking consideration. Once the main avast! interface... "C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashAvast.exe"... is closed the ShellIconCache is wrecked-- if the Folder Selection button had been pressed. So, even if you wait until shut down before closing it, the cache needs to be regenerated at the next boot. Therefore, the icons will draw a tad more slowly at that boot, & it takes a 2nd boot to actually recreate the ShellIconCache file itself. I guess that's no big deal-- but I do wish avast! would actually fix it. I wonder whether the problem exists in the Professional Edition too, or only in the Home Edition.
